If shounen is what guys read, then BERSERK is the greatest one you will ever see. Most action/violence/gore/sex/romance/char dev.etc. Ive never seen such a good story. Its on its 32nd volume scanlated all the way to the most recent ch. Its the best read of my life and IMO is the single greatest story ever told.

It's not mentioned here because Berserk is seinen, not shounen. Although I do agree that it's great, it's my favorite manga.

My personal favorites are Air Gear and Bleach.

If i have to give my top 5:

they would be

1. GTO: the best shounen of all time. its a little vulgar and boorish, but it is a joy to read. It is funny and you just fall in love with the characters. Also Onizuka is the best character in any manga. EVER.

2. School Rumble: Once again a hilarious school romance. In the beginning it was funny but moved really slow. However, now the story is finally coming out. Behind Onizuka, Harima is my 2nd fav manga character. Eri is my fav(female).

3. One Piece: A masterpiece. Once it is finished, it could possibly be better than GTO. 440+ chapters, numerous hilarious characters, and 10+ years of publication, and it doesn't even feel like the story is anywhere near the climax. Yet, it just keeps you hooked on.

4. Ichigo 100%: A surprisingly refreshing romantic comedy. around 180 chapters and is a great transaction though manaka's life.

5. Full Metal Alchemist: different and better than the anime. the characters are pretty much the same, the world is the same, and the ideas are the same, yet the manga takes a different, and i feel better, plot.

Akumetsu - Highly recommended but slow scanlations

Angel Densetsu - Almost died laughing

Mahou Sensei Negima

Out of all those though I would say Akumetsu intrigues me the most followed by Angel Densetsu, King of Hell, and Fairy tail.

base on sales number of its manga tankoubons and its numerous merchandise? One Piece rules the genre.

my personal opinion? One Piece. 😀

I think it's better to split shonen in to smaller category such as
Adventure
Sports / Hobbies
Harem & Romance
Drama
Comedy, well actually most shonen manga contains comedy
