One thing that ruins manga for me are the random plot twists that ruin a character or the story. Now, I'm not saying all are bad, but my ratings for these manga went down a bit after that one certain part. Now, most of the ones I have read you might not know, but you might.

1. Otaku No Mesume-San

Finding out Taeko and Sousuke are married and actually in love. This ruined it for the sole fact that Taeko was the main characters main love interest. Now, her character has turned into the annoying wife and they are acting like Kouta never liked her.

2. Onani Master Kurosawa

Kurosawa's main love interest started dating another guy, and thus another manga went downhill after that happened.

3. Death Note

L Died. Now, unlike the other ones I still liked Death Note after this, but making L such a central character and then killing him was messed up.

4. Zero

Not really a plot twist, but it did get weird and confusing at the end.

5. Mahou Tsukai Kurohime

Zero isn't Zero.

Now, you might not agree with the ones I have said if you have read them, but I know after reading them my enjoyment went down a lot. 😢

Generally speaking, I like plot twists. It's so boring when everything is expectable. That's why I love manga like "20th Century Boys" 🙂
Plot twists are not bad, but sometimes authors don't know what to do after them - and the manga gets worse. Since you mentioned Death Note:

L's death was a great moment, I didn't expect it at all, I was shocked :) But it's clear that that authors didn't know what to do later. The manga could go in a completely different direction, but instead some poor substitutes of L appeared. The manga got much worse after volume 7.

"good" twists are "good", "bad" twists are "bad".

most manga without twists are boring. mangas with bad twists pulled outta the authors arse are bad.

the most important thing about a twist is how it's laid out, what follows after. after a train wreck of many month, when there's some kind of redemption and things go in a good direction, even kimi no iru machi could become good again.

though the follow ups don't necessarily have to be "good" (as in happy end). look at shin angyo onshi for example. after munsu got shit on throughout the whole story and every twist was a bad one for him, and then the end wasn't even a "good ending". but damn, it was fucking badass

Yeah, I guess, but the one in Otaku no Mesume-San is the worst I have ever seen.

Vampire Knight

They're siblings. Or something to that effect. It just got too weird.

Kimi no iru machi:

He manages to make almost everyone hate the main heroine and enjoy a character death that was probably intended to be sad. I really don't believe that was his intention and so I consider it a failure of a twist. I'm not sure if I could think of a manga w/ worse twists. Unless of course that was all planned and he wanted his readers to get pissed off.

i think that plot twists are actually really great.. because first you were expecting this to happen but it will never happen now and you then go wtf?! this is what i think is why most people here hate plot twists... i actually loved the plot twists in Onani Master and Otaku no Musume.. and i love it when they go against what they expected...

I was shocked for a couple of days after Onani master twist...jesus....it was like "WHY HIM?!?!??WHYYYY?!JESUS WHYYY?!?!ANYONE BUT HIM!PLEASE!"
Kimi no iru machi is kinda strange yeah...it's hard for me to believe that mangaka dumped the main heroine just like that=| after 100+ chapters...all those childhood memories...but well..i'm pretty sure she will be back in no time...just right at the time when everything will be good)
Didn't read the Otaku one...but i heard from my friend that it's pretty the same as Onani master...

There is another terrible one...in the Kandachime...it was really brutal twist=| I get it...it was needed for the plot development..but still...i was like "No waai....she's not dead...nu-uh!cry"

Though the thing that really matters is the ending really...usually after these twists i drop a manga for a bit or (if completed) looking for a spoiler of the ending...coz I DON'T read non-happy endings....(well there are exceptions ofc...some manga just HAVE to end bad..) There are enough depressing stuff in a real life...i don't want to see them in manga too-_- I read it for the positive emotions

I'm of the opinion the plot twist in Kimi no iru machi was brilliant. Now I will never drop the series as I am far too interested in finding out why Eba did that to Haruto and I now want to see if after the reason (or reasons) is/are revealed whether or not they will be able to reconcile.

Yes, I am one of that small minority that still want Eba and Haruto to get back together.

In my opinion the Onani master twist was awesome. Of course it sucked at the point, but thats what this manga is about and it lead to this genius ending.

The Plot Twist that bugs me the most is from vinland saga.

when askel is killed an thorfinn loses all his will. This really ruined the manga for me, I kept on reading 2 more chapters and then stopped...

an pretty old Plot Twist I still really hate is in Berserk

after all these kids start following him, its like uncle Gats Kindergarten-group... with this the manga completely changed.... Also his armor that makes him unhumanly strong and fast but he isnt allowed to use it -_-. this happens in so many mangas and i always hate it

Well and all the Twists right now in Bleach are pretty hillarious, too...

like "I'm not number 10 I'm numer 0!!!!!!111" I was laughing so hard because of the stupidity^^ and all the Dragonball Z stuff like having x forms they can transform to and the newest joke with training for years in a space where time moves so much slower....

for me the worst plot twists are the ones I see coming, or doesn't take me by surprise. If a plot twist makes me say "omg I never saw that coming" then that's a good plot twist.
