Hi, I'm looking for an anime or manga series (if it's an anime, I've most likely seen it) where the protagonist (male) is happy, cheerful and kind but then something happens to him and he becomes cold, dark, brooding, angry, maybe even evil, preferably near the start of the series or if not, before the start of the series.

Examples:
The Count of Monte Cristo (anime and Alex Dumas novel)
Ubel Blatt
Kaze no Stigma
Parasyte/Kiseijū
Opposite of Rurouni Kenshin
Area 88

Death Note

Light wasn't really cheerful. 😀 He was always looking down at others. Or did you mean someone else?

Berserk, but it doesn't happen until later in the series. When it does happen, though, you'll be glad you waited.

Gutts, Griffith's only friend leaves his The Band of The Hawk, his mercenery group. Because of this, Griffith spirals into a depretion, sleeps with the king's daughter, gets almost all of The Band of the hawk killed, and is captured and subjected to non-stop torture for of the year. When The Band of the Hawk finally do rescue him, though, he's not the same Griffith they used to know...

This isn't really a manga, at least I haven't seen it, but the anime Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is kind of like that. The main guy character is kind of a combination of the evil Machiavellian nature of Light and the genius of L

Oh and the guy wasn't evil to start with, he had both evil and good within him.

Shin Angyo Onshi
I think quite a few of them are like that in there.

Get Backers
Kind of the friend turning evil type thing

Histories Strongest Disciple Kenichi
Same as above

Naruto
Pretty obvious

Watashi No Messiah-Sama
More like being controlled and turning evil

I'm talking about the protagonist of the series, it happening for other characters doesn't matter.

try eden, really nice manga the protagonist developing from an innocent boy to a cold hearted killer

if you are looking for a really dark turning protagonist, you can try shamo

vinland saga is good as well, the protagonist changed due to his father dead

zetman is also a fine manga

Yu Yu Hakusho. Yusuke goes through some pretty big personality changes.

I wouldn't say so, he has more or less the same personality at the start of the series that he does at the end.

MPD Psycho.

I'm not 100% sure it counts, as its a split personality but...
Crime solver to mass murderer anyone?

Dissociative identity disorder doesn't count 🙂

I'm reading Zetman, it's good. I'll check out Vinland Saga and Eden. As for Shamo, I don't appreciate the male prostitute quality in a character 😉
