Yep, i've seen someone getting seriously scolded because of that. I really, really wanted to ask - if none of the sailors die that day, am I supposed to go and kill one?

I believe it! It's unsafe to walk under a ladder anyway. I also heard if these stuff happen on Friday the 13th, it's VERY bad luck. Same goes for black cats.
