My friend has to jump on a wall or something when a tractor drives past as apparently its bad luck for your feet to be touching the floor as it drives by you. He's a pretty big guy.

@hermit-chan: my mom used to tell me the same but i never believed it.

She also said it's bad luck to try on a wedding dress until the actual day. So you just have to buy one and hope it looks good. My mom had hers made to measure but she still had to pin it all over to make it fit right.

I know a lot of silly superstitions...and the bad thing is a lot of people still believe in them back where I grew up:

what you eat when you're pregnant actually influences the physical traits of your baby. I often hear mothers saying their babies are fair skinned because they ate coconut meat while pregnant, or this guy is addicted to gambling because the mother used to play cards... 😐

Pregnant mothers have the power of changing sweet fruit-bearing trees into sour fruit-bearing ones...That's why they're not allowed to pick fruits from somebody else's trees 😐

tomato seeds can give you kidney stones

scratching when you have your period=stretch marks

sweeping at night gives you bad luck

There are lots of other superstitions but these are the ones that first came to mind...

Oh? Which culture are you brought up in?

That nail-clipping superstitions are from Malay culture, I learnt that people in the past used knives/blades to 'clip' their nails, clipping your nails at night (using a sharp knife) is discouraged because it's hazardous doing that in the dark. Which is why this kind of superstition exists to scare children =)

wow! I never knew that it's actually culturally shared!

I'm filipina. The Philippines is influenced by Malay culture among other things so close enough I guess. I never knew that's where the superstition came from. Now that I think about it I have seen older people use knives or scissor to cut their nails. 😐

lol, i actually learned something new today.

If you wear your shirt inside out, it would over flow with rain/snow that school will be forced to close.

Also....

The notion that if you sneeze out of no where, then someone must be talking about you is plain funny. I wonder how that even originated as a famous manga superstition.

i tried to remember some..
there is one about if your eyelashes fell, that mean that some one is missing you..
and this is a superstition that i used to believe (when i was a kid btw), it said that if you have a pencil that is shorter than your pinky finger, that mean that your mom will die faster which i was once so scared and threw all of my short pencils..
lol that's when i was in kindergarden... 😀

There's a superstition that if a pregnant woman looks through a keyhole, the child will be born cross-eyed. My mom actually did it on purpose, to see what happens 🙂 But my eyes are fine, so this myth is busted 🙂

I've always found this superstition hilarious: when you say something you don't want to happen, you have to spit three times behind yourself over your left shoulder 🙂 Or knock on unpainted wood.
Or: when you leave your house, but you have to return because you forgot something, you can't just grab it and leave - you have to sit down and wait for a moment. I don't know what's supposed to happen if you don't.

The way it was told to me is that if you don't do that you end up losing or forgetting something of a greater value. I believe it! : D

My mom told me to never sleep with socks on because it shortens your life-span, I don't know why though. And never bring in the new year with empty pockets because it foretells your fortune for that year.

It's bad luck to sweep the floor at night.
You won't grow anymore if someone steps over you.

^^ Those are just silly.
Btw, my ring finger is taller. But I'm the more dominant partner in more ways than not.
