Depends on how good/bad one is. A mediocre story with amazing art can really draw me in and visa versa. Well, actually I value the story a bit higher than art.

It's a balance between the two. First of all, if the artwork of a manga is not tolerable at all, then I probably wouldn't even pick up the manga (if I didn't care about the art at all, I would read a novel). However, I'll pretty much read almost any manga as long as it has decent art (that's tolerable to my eyes) and a fairly enjoyable plot. Even if the art is just absolutely beautiful, if I don't find the manga enjoyable one bit, then I'd drop it right away.

Sometimes though, I make exeptions and art that I wasn't too fond of before, I was able to get past it because of the story (and looking at the art long enough). So yeah, as long as it's not too terrible w/ a good story, I'm usually ok with that.

Eh.. it's really hard to decide. D: I have to say both. xDD For me, I really can't get into the story if the art is bad.. like Itazura no Kiss or whatever it's called... people say the plot is good and that you'll get used to the art, but I just.. dislike the art. D: I couldn't keep reading it. >< The characters in the manga kept saying things like "oh, he's so handsome/hot" and everything, when he's not.. xD;; It kind of annoyed me.. >< I know it's going to become an anime soon, and I watched the trailer.. but the guy looks the same.. xD

Um.. so.. I think the art is really important, but same thing with plot. If the art is good but plot is bad, I don't think I would continue reading it. >< The story has to be interesting! 8D <3

For me, plot can support the ugliest of art but art cannot support the ugliest of plot.

I dunno... _ Art is Majority of the Awesomeness for a Manga, Yet Plot helps draw me deep into the story and makes me wanna buy more ...

A good plot can make the art "grow" on me or at least make it tolerable. However, I have not found art in a manga that has kept me reading a bad or even a so so story... yet.

As much as I am plot oriented, I am still waiting for that exception to the rule for me... a manga with art so awesome that will make me put up with a mediocre story (as I can imagine a really bad story line having a prayer no matter how good the art).... 🙁 sigh... might as well... there is always hope... 😉

well arts come first but if they really want to save it, the plot must be extremely good. else if the plot sucks then i don't see the point even if the arts is great.

and sometimes when you see how sweet a guy is and even if he is so ugly xD you'll find him a prince charming in the manga xD

When I look for a manga, i look at the plot, but while actually reading it, the art can make me stop reading it if I dont like it. Thats why I dont read much shonen or seinen, i dont really like the art (personally)

first of all, i dont really read much shoujo mainly becuz of the artwork, the light drawing and the eyes are kinda annoying but if the plot is alluring enough and the artwork isnt dat bad, i will probably read it

in my point of view, i get through such few shoujos b/c of the art style

for me if it is shoujo, it better have great art

ex:

Fruits basket
Vampire knight
(superior wasnt bad)

(im an artist so i like good art)

but anyway, for me in shoujo

Art > plot (of course in shounen its the opposite)
but you know it depends, cuz if the

story isnt serious enough or the characters are bad then it becomes:

plot > art

so in the end it is:

art = hook + plus point
plot = makes me read the story (and finish it)

in shoujo, shounen, or any manga it is usually like that

however, sometimes popularity of plot makes art bearable for a first try

so you never know

😀

I dont understand why everyone hates shoujo art so much? why? the art is the reason I LIKE shoujo.

well, shoujo/josei 's art is focused to appeal girls i think. Being objective, seinen has better art (some shonen too), still it may not be so appealing to the shoujo reader audience.
I can stand the art if the plot is good, but i can't stand a bad plot even if it's really well drawn.

Quote from Dubby

Someone explain to me what's 'bad" about Ouran's art. =/

I looked through the first chapter and this is what I consider "bad" art:
1.The jawline. The damn jawline. It's too close to the mouth and it looks weird in sideviews and 3/4 views. Front view is ok though. (the mangaka of Silver Diamond has the same problem.
2.The chibi forms seem a bit too lazy, but it's the same with most shoujos.
3.As you said earlier on, the eyes. I've never been too fond of them soo..meh.
4. And something that is probably just my personal preference, the toning.

The mangaka uses a lot of very light, patterned tones, and I personally prefer more contrasting tones with strong lineart, while hers is a bit too soft.

The characters' outfits aren't terribly detailed either. Tanemura Arina and Sakai Mayu (no comment on their egg-shaped eyes =_=, I gave them as examples because they're in the same sphere of shoujo) use tones mostly to detail the outfits of the characters and their panels seem a bit more clear and "free" compared to Hatori Bisco's.
As for later chapters, I'm glad to see most of the stuff looks better 🙂

...everything here is only about the art. The storyline was good 😀
