Art vs. Plot

I have to be drawn in by the art first truth be told.
Actually ugly art isn't what neccesarily makes me back away. It's certain styles.
-
I tend to stay away from stories that look like this.Marugoto Ore no Mono because they usually have weak plots and are just smut. So I am judging by looks (and making assumptions about the plot. XD )
-
Manga that look like they are cg from a guys dating sim game (the the weird cutesy look D: )
-
I guess art from like the early-mid 90s? The ones that seem to be inspired by classic shoujo. (Basara, Mars, Red River) * I don't really avoid this style now because i appreciate the rawness(?) and I associate it with epic stories :3 Sadly it's so easy to go into the ugly/pretty look.

Old school girly girly manga XD it's too much sometimes.

I mean yeah gorgeous but it can easily slip into ugly pretty XD
Anyway I try not to because I know that's how you can end up missing great manga. I avoided MARS, Skip Beat* and HYD (among others) and they are a few of my top manga.

well as a lot of people have probably already stated:
to be honest i value plot over art but i definitely judge manga by their covers...if the art looks ugly, i generally wont read it unless the plot sounds really really good... 😀

hhmm..many people prefer plot I see....as for me, I'm biased towards the art...If the art looks awesome...I'll definitely put it in my wish list...but if the story looks interesting but lack of good art, then I'll give it a try too(with much consideration and encouragement) only that I don't get into my 'zone'...because it's hard(extremely hard) for me to enjoy a manga with not a very good art...for exp like the first poster said,Hana Yori Dango...I've heard soo many good things about it but I just couldn't bring myself to read it even if I have the complete vol in my com and Nodame Cantabile's story intrigue me and I just started to read it because of all the great reviews and all that but I read it super slow and when I'm in a good mood..only that way I can enjoy a manga with not a very good art
p.s.well, that's me you guys 😀 and I'm new here...douzo yoroshiku~

For me, i'm really shallow. i don't look at manga with bad art, but i do make exceptions for an extremely good plots. and i wish there were more manga that has great art and great story.

The story told is the very reason as to why I read manga (and read books, see films & series), when I want pretty pictures there's always heaps and heaps of illustrators to chose from, children's books illustrators can in particular be really really great. This goes for all sorts of media usually. A film that reeks of ugly shots would have no negative impact at all if the story told was sufficiently well told.
Btw, I got a bit confused... I may very well be posting about the wrong theme... But is there a difference between a story and a plot?
As I see it (or rather the way i think about the word) the plot is just the chain of events that occurs in a story, the story is "bigger" than that right? The story changes upon reading (impressions and such) but the plot is always static, or is it? Please help, I won't be able to sleep with without an answer...
EDIT... Sorry, found out about that google thing just now. The answer is reversed to how I thought it was. 🤣 🤣
Do you know what people did in the old days when they had secrets they didn't want to share?
They'd climb a mountain, find a tree, carve a hole in it, whisper the secret into the hole and cover it up with mud. That way, nobody else would ever learn the secret...

i would go for both, but mostly i check the art out first because (i dont know how u would say it) i like to admire to artwork, there is a limit to how much i can take on the "silly" artwork
then second i would go for the plot :]

plot definetly. i am tired of silly shoujo without plots. art is not that important.

i start with the name, if i don't like the name i won't pick it up, or click on it,
2nd is the art, if i don't like the art, very rarely can i stomach the book, now i'm not saying the art work has to be epic, i just have to like it
then would come the story;
i have tried to read things based on the story acting bias of the art and could get though it, then it was made into a drama and i could watch it no prob, so having a combination of all of the above is important for me 😀

Plot.
Art is nice, and I feel it should help convey a story and theme through style and all that, but I can deal with decent art.
If a style is extremely painful on my eyes, I'll either drop the series or warm up to it.

Plot first, art second
Of course, it's my first instinct to pick up manga with great art (yes, I judge a book by its cover sometimes). However, after 12 years of reading manga, I've come to the point where I can pinpoint whether the artwork isn't "sand in your eyes painful", but simply outdated and just needs a little getting used to (rose of versailles, really early ikuemi ryo, or any other mangaka). Even if the art is great, if the story is terrible, I end up wanting to slit my jugulars. If the art is terrible, and I find that the story is great, then I can live with that.

Plot.
The art always looks the same to me with every story.

Well, both have to be good. I don't want to read a manga with great art but with a terrible/nonexistent story. I also don't want to read a manga with a great story but with bad art so I can't understand what's happening

Actually, I have no choice but to do that sometimes when I'm doing a stand-read at a used manga shop. There's no way you can sift through all those aisles, so you have to pick and choose sometimes based on titles (when you're not familiar with the artist), since they don't display comics.
