I had never heard about piñatas since I have never seen once in my life. I went looking for what they are and I don't consider them "animal abuse". They are fake and too ridiculous to resemble a real animal. Even if children wanted to hit a real animal to get candies, their potential victim wouldn't be so stupid to let them do it. I saw that some piñatas resemble horses: a child trying to hit one of these giants would have a very bad moment.
(here in Italy we have "pignatte", which are basically the same thing, but I don't think they are animal-shaped).

Of course it's not animal abuse. Don't you know all piñatas want to get hit, well most of them. It's all in the song. (Great now I want to play that game on the 360)

But really hitting something that is an inanimate object that happens to look like a living creature isn't animal abuse. That's like ... (analogy I wanted to use is too dirty ... cough ) saying throwing a barbie doll down the stairs is like attempted murder.

A pinata can be shaped like just about anything the creator can put the paper into, and most of them don't even resemble a living thing.
