I'm compelled to mention It’s Not My Fault That I’m Not Popular!, if only because the "ugly" Tomoko has a friend that underwent the typical "pretend ugly" to beautiful transformation, much to the bane of Tomoko.
However, this manga has more to do with social awkwardness and self-loathing than it does physical ugliness, and she could probably be "cute" if she tried. Too bad she only "tries" wrong, which is comical and intriguing in that she knows the problem, wants to fix it, but just... can't break the mental barrier preventing her from doing so. Which leads to a lot of quick-fix remedies that, more often than not, fail.
It mostly presents itself in a comedic manner, but not with the sense that the issue at hand is a comedic problem. It's also a shounen with no foreseeable romance as of yet, so pass it up if you want, but know that it's fifteen chapters deep without a cure for "ugly" in sight. There's a possibility of this ending in a "beautiful transformation", but for now, come watch Tomoko be awkward.
Sidenote: Beats headphones have invaded Japan? Aw... this make me sad.
