I'll agree with dalek about Apothecarius Argentum, I only read a chapter or two but that definitely sounds like it.

There are tons and tons of English words that originate from other languages. It's perfectly acceptable to inflect them according to the English rule. My friends and I say platypi...actually...we use 4 forms...platypus (like fish already plural), platypuses, platypi, and platypodes (used by the super nerdy ones...though we usually just tell them to can it and use platypi). My biology class in 9th grade actually had a whole discussion on it for 40 minutes - the length of a period. We even got our teacher involved so she didn't really realize we wasted class time...XP
