Not elitist in terms of taste. Maybe elitist in terms of thinking that I should buy what I read and in terms of my thoughts regarding ethics. I avoid anime, but that is mostly a monetary issue for me.

I don't think elitist opinions are all that bad just they end up causing harm. This might not be relevant to the elitist comment (in which case, I apologize), but I do think it is bad to avoid certain types of series for superficial reasons. In my opinion, I think that people should the test waters repeatedly, particularly if they are avid readers -- though if you enjoy whatever series you think to, that's fine, but I'm making the recommendation because there are a lot of things to experience in the world (including not reading manga, lol). I am slightly critical of people avoiding certain kinds of series because they are of a certain type (e.g., ecchi/smut/gender bender/mature) -- even out of reasons grounded in personal morality -- because the content of these categories varies widely; between various websites labels like ecchi, smut, and mature (gender bender is pretty clear, though) might be found on one and missing on another. Though if it is out of reasons of personal morality, I think it is wise to avoid content that is potentially problematic for you, but by talking to fellow manga readers whose opinion you trust and they point out that a series with a label which is causes you to question its content is mild in content, you might find gems for yourself. (The finding of unlikely gems is directed to all.)

You should have a half-half option on the poll
I keep up with Naruto, sorta like it, am not obsessed, don't make fun of but try to dissuade "narutards", but I don't say the word "narutard"
I also watch some anime with alternate plotlines, but I also try not to watch some other alternate-plotline ones
But I read MANY mainstream mangas, so...
No I am not 🙂

The word "narutard" occassionally pops up in my head. I'll read/watch whatever is good but I'll throw it away if I don't like it. I wouldn't read it just because it is popular. I'll just watch or read whatever is good to me, follow recommendations if I enjoy it, and just do whatever I want with what I select to do so.

I am elitist.

As in, I despise Yaoi and Shounen-Ai. Largely because it took me a while to discover the filter option on the releases. But I do refuse to ever read one of those genres.

I wouldn't call that being an elitist. More like a justifiable dislike. Like someone disliking horror or mecha.

if there is any way i can be called an elitist, it will be that i cannot understand how anyone can hate mecha.
i hate yaoi and shounen-ai also 😁

Are you a manga snob? Maybe?

Quote from ahoaho

Do you make fun of Narutards? Not only of narutards!

Quote from ahoaho

Do you refrain from the mainstream manga, solely due to it's popularity? Hmm, not directly. Example: I refrain from reading WSJ-series (who usually are - for some reason - tremendously popular), because since OP I have yet to find a WSJ series that's readable. But I still read a lot of (mediocre-bad) "mainstream" manga to kill my boredom.

Quote from ahoaho

Do you refuse to watch the Anime versions of certain series because they stray too far from the plot? I refuse to watch anime adaptions of scanlated/purchased manga for many reasons. Actually anime that strays far away from the original plot are a lot more interesting... I would consider it a waste of time to watch a story I already know.

Quote from ahoaho

Are you an Elitist? Dunno.

And obviously reading manga that the masses like is usually not a sign of quality. The majority people reading manga lack the exposure to/need more experiences with other forms of literature. They often don't try to broaden their horizon and try to stay within their "safe-haven" of their preferred medium of choice (i.e. manga/comics/books/etc.). Art has many many different facets, but the majority of people will always stick to one form. And once your socialization is "complete" and your inner system of attitude/tastes/etc is set it's TOO LATE.

Manga elitist?! 🤣

I think that's kinda funny. I have manga I like and manga I don't like. That is all.

I wouldn't consider being it to be an elitist if you do not like poor quality mangas. Just like how one can say they don't like poor quality movies.

I've read and enjoyed mainstream manga. I don't avoid something just because it's popular. It might actually be popular for a good reason. I'm open to reading everything mainstream or not, but obviously I have my preferences. I don't like mecha either. 🤣

I don't make fun of Narutards. Mainly because I have never watched or read Naruto so I wouldn't recognize one if I saw them.

I normally don't watch anime if I've already read the manga.

So yeah, I wouldn't say I'm an elitist.

I'm not sure. I don't make fun of Naruto fans. I don't differentiate between mangas, I try to read first then judge. I don't read mangas just because they're mainstream or popular (case in point: Death Note).

If you don't read popular manga ONLY because it's popular, you're really doing yourself a dis-service. True, there are a lot of series that are popular for all the wrong reasons, or popular for God-only-knows-what reasons. But there are also some popular series that are popular because they're actually pretty good.

NOT reading a series based on its popularity makes no more sense than only reading the super popular series. In either case, you're letting other people dictate what you will and won't read.

Aw, crap. I totally necro-posted here. Sorry. I don't see any way to delete my post, or else I would.

I am definitely not an elitist. I will read just about anything, regardless of popularity.
I don't care if anyone is a Narutard, that's their choice. It doesn't effect me, so let them go nuts.
I'll watch the anime, even if it strays. I like variety and different versions of the same story could be interesting.
