Elitist?

Can't a person compress his thoughts into three lines nowadays? 🤣 I never said anything about not having standards. I actually encourage people to have standards. People can like whatever they want and dislike whatever they want. It's when they act haughty/cocky and enforce their standards on others which irks me. At least that's how I always viewed elitism as.
I reckon that this is more of a problem on semantics on my part.
I envision them to cocky, disrespectful, arrogant, etc.And I made that post when I just woke up, so excuse me for being a bit absentminded. I realize myself that the post was narrowminded, but that was only to emphasize the dislike that I have for such people.
It actually has nothing to do with acting haughty. The notion of elitism is through earned respect- for example, a book critic might be considered an elitist, as they've read enough and have enough of a knowledge base to be considered an expert on the subject. You take an expert's opinion more seriously than that of a layman with no knowledge in the subject- that's both common sense and elitism.
There's a difference between thinking you have an opinion that carries the most weight, and actually having the experience to back it up. You're having a biased interpretation of the definition here, try reading it again with what I just said in mind.

Only a retard would not read/watch something because it's popular. But if the anime strays too far from the manga (like fillers) i don't watch it because it's just boring to me. And i can't read shoujo because to me, the art looks shitty..

I am critic and objective, but i don't think i'm elitist.
It's true that :
- I stop looking anime that stop following the manga story and go nowhere.
- I will not hesitate to critic the storie, dialogue, or drawing of a manga when i think the autor don't put any effort in it like in bleach (even if i admit that he find quite the gold mine seeing how his manga sell well ), but i wont hesitate to critic serie that i like too if the autor start to make bad chapter.
- but well the only exeption is that i have hard time with shoujo manga because this is alway the same drawing and i can't take it ( but sometime i read some like 3/4 or so : ).

Eh, it turned into an argument about what elitism meant… but regardless of who is right or wrong, I think the definition Doc was going for here was from the opening post? (I.e. making fun of Narutards and not into mainstream stuff)
Anyway, unlike book critics, it’s harder to distinguish someone who only thinks his/her opinion carries weight from someone who “has experience to back it up”. Most so-called manga critics don’t have literature degrees or something. Okay, I’m not saying you should have one to critique manga but just that it’s not easy to differentiate who has credibility from someone who hasn’t. How do we get one anyway? Read a particular number of manga? Be an expert in literature or art?

As to the first part, that's my fault so I'll apologize. Doc was just using a term technically incorrectly and it tickled my semantics-nazi pet peeve at an odd hour (doc's post was just what I saw, this really was directed at the thread in general and not doc, I just turned him into a representative... sorry about that). Even then though, the opening is technically using the terminology in a misleading manner.
For the rest, I think it should be obvious. Not all book critics have literature degrees, they're just well-read <and there's no number for that, it's just a quality> and articulate people with evidence to back up rational arguments and interpretations (well, good book critics anyways... there are good and bad examples of everything). Just like it's obvious to everyone when someone's just bullshitting, it's obvious when someone actually knows what they're talking about and are making an honest attempt to look objectively, rather than just attempting to assert some sort of superiority complex or whatever.
And yes, I am someone who believes in elitism. So I am an elitist. As to whether or not I could critique particular genres (more so demographics, really) well enough objectively is debatable.

I have a proclivity towards pretension, but the good news is that usually I know how utterly ridiculous I'm being (or if I don't, then a family member or a friend is usually there to bring me back down to Earth)!
In regards to manga, I'll read pretty much anything. Really. I am sometimes a little reluctant to start manhwa titles, but everything else is pretty much up for grabs.
HOWEVER.
I am a very critical reader. There aren't very many manga that I would actually recommend to other people because of problems I've had with story, art, character development or whatever.
So basically, I read a whole lot of stuff, but I only recommend the gems to other people.

I'm surprised at the number of yes votes o_o;
I bet if we met any of those people who voted yes, then they'd call us dirty commoners, adjust their monocles, and then eat and drink with their pinkies up. 🤣

I wouldn't do that! Besides, you're cool anyway, Loosecannon. If I remember correctly, you're a 4channer like me? That Rorschach avatar is from that custom Beat 'Em Up some guy's creating ain't it?
Nope i'm nowhere near an Elitist.
I make up my own decisions on whether I think a series is good or not. Popularity means nothing to me.
I don't watch that much anime either.

I see you knew I got my avatar from 4chan. But I thought it was for M.U.G.E.N. at first...

..what's an elitist btw??
I've been reading the posts in this thread but I still have no clue what it is...
As for me...well, I AM NOT ashame to read some very mainstream mangas...especially the big shounen titles like Onepiece, Gantz and Claymore.and deathnote..or shoujo mangas like Fruit basket and Vampire knight. There IS a reason why these mangas deserve their popularity. BUT, that doesnt mean I GO WITH THE "TREND"..like those rabid Twilight/Edward Cullen fangirls (which is obviously STUPID btw).
I read mangas as I pleased, if I like it, I take it. If I HATE it, I would either drop it or flame it! 😮
and oh, it is sickening sometimes when you meet someone who likes manga but all they read are either Naruto or Bleach.. and judge Oda's onepiece by its volume length and its 'horrible' artwork.

Oh, well I just remember seeing the guy who's working on it posting a thread about his progress. You browse /co/ much?
I'm not an elitist ~ why wouldn't you read a manga just because other people liked it? 😕 I could never deprive myself of good manga... 🤣

Elitist? Is it whether I look at ratings or not? It depends on a genre. If it's some drama, then yes. If it's some er.. adult then no. I'll be a snob. People tend to give low ratings because the story turned depressing or extremely sick.
As for mainstream shounen/shoujo manga it's just too epic for me. I won't follow.
Do I make fun of people reading mainstream? I don't have a deal with them much. Besides I am not very skilled in making fun of someone 🙂 isn't very enjoyable
