Elitist?

I don't think of myself as a manga elitist since as long as I find the storyline interesting, I'll read it anyway, never mind if it's mainstream or not.

I'm not an elitist.
I dont stray away from popular mangas, I actually read them and flow with them. 🙂
I love anime adaptions, for they are cool.
About those narutards, it depends what they do for me to make fun of them! Like if they do something incredibly nerdy and embarassing. >_>; (i've seen them walking around with those headbands in broad daylight. They came in full cosplay and played ddr.. then another group was RPing in a restaurant.)
It's not only Narutards that do that tho. 😛

Oh God, no.
Quote from astroasis
NOT reading a series based on its popularity makes no more sense than only reading the super popular series. In either case, you're letting other people dictate what you will and won't read.
I usually make fun of those people because of this. I could understand if you hated a popular manga because you read it and you still couldn't understand why it was so popular, but not because "Oh, it's popular, so it sucks." That means that even though you try to be all edgy and against the crowd, you're still a puppet getting your strings pulled by those same people because you're letting other people dictate what you will and won't read, like what astroasis typed.

Just because someone's head was chopped off doesn't mean they're dead. That's just silly.
I'm surprised at the number of yes votes o_o;
**Do you make fun of Narutards? **
Nah. I don't like such series as Naruto and Bleach, because I tried them and they don't entertain me.
But if so many people like them, they must feel differently and I'm fine with that.. you should read what entertains you, that's what it's all about anyway.
Do you refrain from the mainstream manga, solely due to it's popularity?
No, there are a lot of series that deserve the popularity they have, like Monster. It's one of the most famous manga, and I really like it.
Do you refuse to watch the Anime versions of certain series because they stray too far from the plot?
No, I don't watch much anime in the first place.
I only have bad feelings toward some popular series for this reason— Manga in the west isn't quite normalized... many people have heard of it, but many have not, or only have a casual acquaintance with it.
When you see manga advertised, it's always the popular mainstream series like Naruto and general Shounen Jump stuff.
One would think by these ads that those series is all the manga world has to offer... it would be like if all western films were limited to modern action flicks, and to find anything beyond that you have to dig deep.
I have nothing against those popular series like I said, but I look forward to when manga gets more popular in the west so maybe less mainstream series could be safely advertised..

Are you a manga snob?
Ehh... I don't think so... I hope not...
Do you make fun of Narutards?
Only if that's all they talk about and go like "OMG!! NARUTO ROX!! HAHA!! YOU DON'T WATCH NARUTO WHAT AN IDIOT YOU ARE LOL. NARUTO=EPIC MANGA AND ANIME!! HAHA ROFL YOU READ 07-GHOST AND AMATSUKI AND WITCH HUNTER!! HAHAHA LOSER! LOSER!!" -.- Seriously, they should get a life.
Do you refrain from the mainstream manga, solely due to it's popularity?
Not really... I read stuff like CardCaptors, Tsubasa Resevior Chronicles, Code Geass, and Bakuman... But if it's wwwaaaayyyy to popular, I don't want to read it. [Code Geass is an exception 'cuz the character designs are by CLAMP X3]
Do you refuse to watch the Anime versions of certain series because they stray too far from the plot?
It depends... If the anime's plot is still really good I'll watch it.
Elitists should shove a hole and bury themselves in there alive.
There's a difference between just having a different taste (looking for other criteria in your medium) and acting haughty. They're basically saying (those tiny, silly humans whose lives don't mean anything) that they know what's best. Just the thought makes me laugh... A~h, human arrogance never fails to annoy me.

Sorry doc, but you understand the actual meaning of the word "elite," don't you? Are you suggesting that, in addition to differing taste, people just shouldn't have standards?
Regardless of personal taste, there are things that you can objectively say are worse than others, and there are certain standards that anything in any medium or genre should uphold. That's just how it works, everything doesn't have equal quality that is up to subjective interpretation. Arrogance aside, elitism is a good thing because it promotes an increase in quality and competitiveness to grab an audience. If you want to use the term narrowly then sure, that's a valid complaint, but from a general standpoint you're describing arrogance and narrow-minded thinking rather than elitism.

Chose no, I just read/watch whatever I find enjoyable to read/watch.
But I do refrain from watching some animes that mess up the story.
Rosario + Vampire for example. I could barely watch the first season. It just sucked. But absolutely not the second for obvious reasons 🤢
I sometimes make fun of those who idolize Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann anime though. Again for obvious reasons of pure horror 🤢 But that's mostly because they're still trying to convince that it's the best anime ever created. 😐
This life sucked. Where's the reset button?

I didn't expect such an ignorant and narrow-minded post from you, Love. I wholeheartedly agree with Crenshinibon, you have to have some sort of standards for everything.
You only have to look at how manga is printed and released in America to see that standards do matter.
For example; Viz Media. They realise the average Naruto reader prefers quantity over quality. The Naruto trades are of average quality, but this allows Viz to print more volumes and release further ones at a constant rate.
With a company like Fanfare/Ponent Mon, they aim to satisfy those who prefer quality over quantity (and their readership is a much older audience), so their manga is usually printed in an oversized format with amazing paper and dust flaps, at the expense of a higher cost and limited print run.
I respect people's tastes and choices, but if they so happen to have dreadful taste and standards I'll tell them up straight.
Can't a person compress his thoughts into three lines nowadays? 🤣 I never said anything about not having standards. I actually encourage people to have standards. People can like whatever they want and dislike whatever they want. It's when they act haughty/cocky and enforce their standards on others which irks me. At least that's how I always viewed elitism as.
I reckon that this is more of a problem on semantics on my part.
I envision them to cocky, disrespectful, arrogant, etc.
And I made that post when I just woke up, so excuse me for being a bit absentminded. I realize myself that the post was narrowminded, but that was only to emphasize the dislike that I have for such people.

I'm not an Elitist. I like any manga that is interesting and I simply can't find enough manga to continue with consistent reading. Mainstream or not, as long as it is enjoyable to read, I'll read it with a fervor. I enjoy reading Naruto every week but I'm not particularly obsessed with it since there are plenty of great manga other than Naruto. I guess the only types I can't stand are Yaoi manga. I don't have a tolerance for it though I do not hate them. I simply don't enjoy it. Am I an Elitist? No, I think not.
Elitism is the belief or attitude that those individuals who are considered members of the elite—a select group of people with outstanding personal abilities, intellect, wealth, specialized training or experience, or other distinctive attributes—are those whose views on a matter are to be taken the most seriously or carry the most weight; whose views and/or actions are most likely to be constructive to society as a whole; or whose extraordinary skills, abilities or wisdom render them especially fit to govern.
Just looked up what Wikipedia said about elitism, and if we'd take this definition of elitism, then it wouldn't make manga elitists look good.

Nah. I usually read whatever I get interested in, doesn't matter if its mainstream or not. Although I do make fun of narutards. XD
But like I said, I can get into a manga that's either popular or not, it just depends on my moods. =3

I certainly view myself as a manga elitist, but no way in hell do I impose upon people that my opinions are the only right ones to take, that's just being an asshole.
