They actually had something like this happen in the UK. A guy robbed a house and tied the victim's family and threatened them. The victim and his brother went to get a cricket bat at beat the living shit out of the robber. The robber got away with brain damage but was released back into society whilst the guy defending his house ended up in Jail.

I personally believe if you want to steal something that belongs to someone else you have no moral higher ground and you should by all means deserve to just be punished as seen fit if you're caught red-handed.
