Ok so out of interest which culture besides your own do you rekon you have a good understanding of since being English I find that a lot of the world have gross stereotypes about us Brits and really fail to understand our satirical sense of humour. Also since this is a manga site I wonder if people think they have gained a good understanding of Japanese culture from reading manga even if they haven't actually visited the country.

My aim here is to put right sterotypes, have a bit of national pride and banter going around (though keep things friendly guys) and just learn a little more about where everyone else lives. This is purely for fun and curiosity sake so don't take any misguided sterotypes to heart. I for one am putting right the idea that all Brits are either Jordie, Cockney, Scouser or Posh Toffs. We don't all speak the Queen's English, have tea and crumpets in the afternoon (though in my part of England we call the evening meal tea) and we haven't all got free access to Buckingham Palace or regularly party with the Princes.

We love to drink, the old English pub is a great tradition in England, we do love our tea (the drink) but we have our coffee shops also. We have a very satirical sense of humour. Of course this a general overview since we've become increasingly multi-national and so multi-cultural. To finish off something a little light-hearted unless I feel the need to defend my beloved country.

*One of the British national daily newspapers is asking readers
"what it means to be British?" Some of the emails are hilarious
but this is one from
a chap in Switzerland...

Being British is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for a
Belgian beer, and then travelling home, grabbing an Indian curry
or a Turkish kebab on the way, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch
American shows on a Japanese TV. And the most British thing of all...

Suspicion of anything foreign.

Oh and...

Only in Britain... do supermarkets make sick people walk all the way to the back of the shop to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in Britain... do banks leave both doors open and chain the pens to the counters.

Only in Britain... do we leave cars worth thousands of pounds on the drive and lock our junk and cheap lawn mower in the garage.

Only in Britain... do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place.

Only in Britain... are there disabled parking places in front of a skating rink.

Isn't it a great country!!!*

Sorry... not really into culture (even my own).

I probably know more about the cultures in yoghurt drink than those of actual countries/regions.

Lived in London for a few years so I know all about their culture (mostly alcohol and clubbing related)

Also traveled a lot, so I've probably experienced a bit of everything you listed.... but the memories are fuzzy (thanks to alcohol).

🤣

🤣 Hate to tell you this, but ALL of those also apply to the US, at least the places I've lived.

In the US you will also often find braille on the drive-up ATMs at banks... 🙄

The cultures I know best other than my own are probably British (read a lot of the literature & watched a lot of the TV shows, took a lot of history classes, visited several times) and Japanese (other than manga & anime, also watch a lot of the TV shows & have read up about a lot of the history & culture).

I'm not claiming to be particularly knowledgeable or misconception-free about either, those are just the two cultures I know most about other than my own. Voted "British" mainly because I understand (most of) the language, whereas with Japanese, I only understand bits & pieces....

@gan, you're so barbaric... 🙄

err...i'll have to say european, seeing i live in Europe.

does watching large number of british sitcoms count as culture, if does, that too.
And that's about it...can't really say knowing a few japanese words and customs counts 🤢

I'm glad I found a fellow Brit. Where abouts are you? I'm a Northern girl myself, North West in Lancashire to be exact though I'm at Uni in Liverpool at the moment. I know a bit about the orient since one of my friends is Thai and my Grandad has done a lot of consulting work in Indonesia and China. I also have a few American friends and love American shows so know a bit about America, only visited once though when I went to Orlando, Florida when I was 12.

When I went to see Chris rock earlier this year he mentioned that we Brits drink a lot, which is probably true. Me and my sister had drinks in the pub just before the show and clubbing is a big part of the night life in every city. Thogh I pity your bank balance clubbing in London, some places are good but mostly it's expensive. Compared to my Irish friends though I don't think we drink a lot. My sister's Irish mate drunk my dad under the table once, it was hilarious!

Should I be scared that Britain and America are melding, lol. We don't have braile on the drive up ATMs though. I don't think he have drive up ATMs. We have ATMs in front of banks but nothing like a fast-food drive through. We have braile on them. The supermarket one crackles me though and I don't think we've ever put our car in the garage, though we do have 3 cars so it would be kinda hard and we live in a nice neighbourhood.

British sitcoms tend to capture our humour very well, especially the older ones like Fawlty Towers and Blackadder, though The IT crowd is fantastic. So yeah that counts towards culture. Where about in Europe do you live and are you from there or just living there? I've been to France and Spain multiple times, Ibiza once and I toured some of Italy a couple of years ago which was amazing.

There's no surprise why "Japanese" has the highest votes 🤣

I voted Japanese, but seeing as I live just outside of San Francisco (which consists in its own little cultural bubble), maybe I should've voted USA 🤣 .
