NHK ni Yokoso! got me between the balls and forced a few tears out.

Something was so horrifically depressing about the ending. I know I would have felt cheated if somehow their lives had turned around and gotten things happy, but at the same time, nobody likes watching people train-wrecking their own lives. Really, that series had me going a few times. Very good at what it does. I loved it for all the morbid humor; for all the schadenfreude; for all the darkness...and those things did that to me. Tsk.

I cry a lot also (I'm a guy) of sad stories; but the anime that made me crying the most was full moon wo sagashite, tears of joy. It's a kid's show, with kid's animation and kid's characters, but damn it that show grabs you by the balls(if you got any ) 😀

I don't think balled is a word.

I don't think balled is a word.

It is, just not the right one for the context. "I balled up the paper" is fine, but I think the word needed above is "bawled". 😃

And to stay on topic, I think I cried some watching Kino no Tabi....can't think of another anime I cried while watching, but I tend to stay away from sad stuff & I don't watch that much anime.

14 Sai no Haha (dorama) had me tearing up several times, though.

Yep, doesn't take much to set me off to be honest, but it's usually a quick wave of emotion and then it's gone. I'll only actually cry if I let myself though, I can easily suppress it.and I usually do because crying gives me vicious headaches and I already have moderately painful headaches most of the time so I don't need any extras thrown in. =P

I cried during Death Note when

Soichiro died, and Light started crying. Seeing Light's tears made me cry. XD Even if he was more crying because Mello didn't die. o_O

I also realized it's Soichiro's fault that Light died. >> DAMN YOU SOICHIRO. ;__; </3 My Mikami and Matt... tear ;;

YEP, THEREFORE, THAT CHARACTER SUCKS. >_>

Anyone who doesn't lose it watching the classic "Grave of the Fireflies" just isn't human.

Cried? No. But there have been some manga which I have found almost overwhelming due to the sadness that they've portrayed.

For example, I found Battle Royale to be utterly gripping -- the whole terrible scenario to start with, the way it played out, the graphic depiction of the horror, pain and suffering of those 9th graders trapped in the Game -- I couldn't put it down, it was so possessing. And parts of it still haunt me.

Gantz has had its moments, too, such as when Kurono found himself completely alone after the Buddha mission, as well as the terrible deaths of some of the hunters, like Kishimoto Kei (which was just plain sad) and Sakuraoka Sei, who was cut down just when it appeared she was victorious.

All of which is proof of great storytelling -- when the story grabs you and won't let go.

Yes, you're right! I had forgotten about that anime. The fate of those two kids was indeed one of the saddest things I've seen in a long time.

In war, it is always the innocent who suffer the most.

What part of Gantz was sad? Saikano was sad though.
