Quote from kichiX

If it's a totally non-romantic manga then I don't want any romance. Like...Bleach say. Bad example
coz

Quote from kichiX

But otherwise, I hate it when the author constantly suggests that there might be some then doesn't develop it. inoue certainly has a feeling for ichigo, but kubo doesn't develop it.
and gin-matsumoto relationship just... too (sadly) romantic.

Doesn't matter to me, if there is some and it's decent, I welcome it, but if there is none and the manga is ok I don't really care.

Where's the, "I like romance when it plays a role in the story but would prefer not to have it there just for the sake of having it there", a.k.a. the "judicious use" option?

Actually I really like romance in a manga. But for non-main-plot-romance-manga recently I realiced that if the manga plot is really good and twisting I don't need it. If I really like the plot the romance just bothers^^

Even though I love romance manga, I'd rather not have it as a subplot. It can seem forced really easily...(of course there are exceptions^^)

I love romance, It is one of my favourite genre. Romance has to be there for me to add that sweet-taste to the story. I also love the mix of romance and horror, the two opposites are definitely my best. For example Highschool of the Dead, Mouryou no Yurikago or Dawn - Tsumetai Te.

There has to be romance in order to balance a manga series out 😀

I didn't vote since the answers don't seem to fit my opinion. As much as I like/prefer romance (I think 95% of the stories on my reading list have a romance tag), if the story doesn't need it, it doesn't need it. And sometimes, a story has a "romance subplot" or hint that is never materialized which kills me if I think that the couple really really should get together cough cough Roy and Riza from FMA cough cough. At other times, romance is randomly thrown, making it seem forced. Sooooo... yeaaaah... if it is done well -- go for it!! If not, just leave it out.

I don't really care.
If romance plays a minor role in the series it can spice up an otherwise boring plot, much like comedy (although I prefer comedy for this matter)
If a manga has neither comedy nor romance in it, it has to have a brilliant plot to make up for it 🙂

At least most series need some romance.

I dunno, but as a person who's a romantic at heart, I want most series to have some romance.

Action/martial arts orientated plots without any romance or sexual tensions are often unbearable for me.

It's the romantic subplot that makes me drawn to action mangas like Basilisk, Berserk, Red Eyes, Akira and Hokuto no ken...especially the latter. Romantic commitments can 'step up' the badassery of the hero...but some romances like Kei's relationship with Tae and Reika in Gantz and saving damsel-in-distress routines like Elie (Ravemaster and that heroin from Eden no ori can be annoying sometimes. 🙂

Can't stand the romance genre, but I agree with Brucie-kun. It's unrealistic (at least in longer series) to have absolutely no romance or sexual tension. It's kinda nice to see the hero "get the girl," but sometimes it just doesn't make sense in the story and the mangaka's editor makes him/her put in pointless romance just to be able to sell to a wider demographic. Ugh.

Trying to think of an example, but I haven't read any manga in months (work sucks) so I'll have to get back to this poll later.

I personally like a good romance that has development of the romance. I personally prefer to see some form of a romance it can be person to person or person with object/machine. Little hints of romance/sexual tension I feel make a story feel more realistic, specially if it's long, has both male and female characters or has a slice of life feel.
But I believe that romance has a wide range it can be anywhere from having sex to having a loving feeling or since of dependency toward a person or object (like a mecha, gun, instrument, sword).

I don't care if there is any romance in a series. All that matters to me is if the series is good. If a good series has a romance in it, I'll still read it.

I put "Doesn't matter to me". Not because I don't like romantic manga (in fact probably about half the manga I read has romance as the focus), but because I also read a good deal without much romance, and most of my favorite series ever are either devoid of romance or leave it on the back-burner because of the dire situations at hand.
