Okay so I haven't really read any yuri before, I've always been more into yaoi but lately I've wanted to try out some yuri. The thing is I don't want yuri that's geared more toward men and that's all about sex and girls with big boobs. I'm looking for something that's more like shojo manga where there is an actual plot and romance. Also I was looking for something that has a female character who acts and dresses very masculine like Haruka Tenoh from Sailor Moon. This might be kind of a strange request and its pretty specific but I was hoping someone knew of a manga along those lines. I find female characters like Haruka very attractive, especially when paired with a character who is much more feminine and sweet. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Kase-san would be a good start. It's shoujo ai for now, tho.
I'll edit for more later.

Well, here's all the series listed as both Josei and Yuri...

Personally, I remember enjoying Free Soul and Indigo Blue, but it's been long enough since I read both series that I don't recall much else about them.

I'm sorry lol I hope I don't sound like too much of a newbie, I know what Yuri is but what is Josei?

Josei is manga that is considered for women - they sometimes contain smut and normally deal with more adult themes... I prefer Josei over Shoujo but then again I am 27

Well there is a female-oriented girls love category, but lots of good stuff are not listed. It's a good start, though.

Oh okay, I think I actually have heard that before but I forgot the word. I mostly read shoujo although some of the ones I've read seem to have more mature themes. Would Red River (Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori) by Chie Shinohara or Ceres: Celestial Legend (Ayashi no Ceres) by Yuu Watase be considered Josei?

Okay, thanks! What are the criteria for this search? Is it just shoujo-ai? If you have any that you particularly recommend I would like to try them out. Thanks! 🙂

Hi Oshiokiyo, sorry for the late reply. I'm not really that experienced with yuri, so I can't give you a lot of recommendations, so I'm just listing every yuri I have read.

Hana to Hoshi is also school life, but the romance development is slow;
You know, when you said "Haruka" from Sailor Moon, the best examples I could think of are: Himitsu no Hanazono (FUJII Mihona), Kawaii Anata, Clover (OTSU Hiyori) , Strawberry Shake and Orange Yellow, short hair and masculine clothes;
Clover (OTSU Hiyori), Mizuiro Cinema and other works by OTSU Hiyori, some are a little sad too;
Poor Poor Lips is a 4-koma I liked, every chapter is short, but has some serious subjects;
Sasameki Koto if you want high school + comedy;
Again, for high school + comedy, try Sougou Tovarisch;
Cirque Arachne is a cute story that I like, a bit rushed, but it's good;
Rakuen no Jouken, Hanjuku Joshi: MORISHIMA Akiko's mangas are good (I gave them a 7...);
Kuchibiru ni Suketa Orange and other works by Rokuroichi;
Ebisu-san to Hotei-san and Knife Edge Girl are quite nice;
If you want SMUT, but still with cute characters, maybe Sweet Guilty Love Bites?
I haven't read it yet, put people say Honey & Honey is really good, Girl Friends, Aoi Hana, Kuchibiru Tameiki Sakurairo, prism (Higashiyama Shou), Blue Friend, Linkage, Hoshikawa Ginza Yonchoume (lolicon tho, so if you can't handle things like Kore wa Koi no Hanashi...), Octave;
The group Lililicious has some good projects, maybe you should check them out.

It's alright, obviously I'm not either lol. I just really loved Kase-san! It was so cute! I also read Himitsu no Hanazono which I thought was really cute too!

Sorry but what's lolicon and Kore wa Koi no Hanashi? Lol I'm really new to this. Thank you SO much for the suggestions! Sorry lol I didn't mean to bug you, I was just excited because your first suggestion was so good and exactly what I was looking for, so thank you! 😀

Oh, you aren't bugging me. Lolicon is a manga with adult x child relationship, in this case adult x little girl, shotacon is for adult x boy. Koi no Hanashi is a manga about adult x girl too, for some people is really cute, but others hate it.

I'm copy and pasting from a post I did awhile ago...

I have prepared a 3-step plan to ensnare others.

First, get your feet wet and start off with the softcore oneshots to see if you can even accept a dabble of yuri, so none of that sex stuff here:

Present (Kurata Uso)
Dusk, orange, the blooming flowers
My duckling
Forever Girls
Sweet temptation
Love me softly
My beloved Kawano-san
For you, my beloved - Based on a true story 😢

Second, we step up to the series. Bring in the drama, stereotypes, and all that jazz:

Sasameki koto
Lonely wolf lonely sheep
Kase-san
Ebisu-san to Hotei-san
Stray little devil
Strawberry shake
Pieta
Hana to hoshi

And third we delve into the actual "yuri" meaning there is sex but not wholly explicit. Sex isn't the focus here but it's part of the addiction:

Octave
Prism (Higashiyama Shou)
Candy (Suzuki Yufuko)
Aoi Hana
Girl friends
Hoshikawa Ginza Yonchoume
Husky and medley - Based on a true story
Hanjuku Joshi - Be warned, 80% sex

Whatever it is, I hope you find what you're looking for
