I was actually just making this in advance. I didn't think anyone would actually vote until the movie came out!

nice.
I voted for Heath, he creeped the crap out of me in the trailer(s).
Jack? Eh. Not really scary-ish enough for me.

Okay, I just saw the movie, and I gotta say that Heath Ledger's performance just blew me away! Jack Nicholsan was great, but I'm going for Heath on this one.

Ah, the nostalgia of idiots past.
Haven't seen the movie, but Jack is a better actor than Heath was.

After seeing the movie, chances are you'll eat those words.

Doubtful.
Notice I didn't say he was a better Joker. That has to do with the script and the direction.
But Jack's body of work is so much better than Heath's it's not even a competition.

I think both actors are great Jokers, but they have tackled the role in completely different ways. While Jack plays the Joker to perfection, he is still a lot more cartoonish, while Heath humanized the role and made the Joker a truly mad and disturbed human being. While both actors do have a say in their characters, the Directors have the ultimate say since they are the ones that interpret the content and convey a message to the audience. Out of all the Batman villains, Heath's Joker is the most humanized one, making his performance eerily believable.

Ah, considering this is a Joker thread, I assumed you were talking about how Joker was portrayed, rather than the actors themselves (I wouldn't have an opinion anyway since I'm not familiar with Nicholson's works).

That's odd, since I found Heath's to be much more in line with the cartoon and comic (This is true plot wise, as well). Jack's was just weird, more like the Joker after that Comic Censorship act turned him into a loser who the batman didn't have to take seriously instead of a psychopathic murderer, as he started and became again later.

Yea, I'm not sure how the votes looked before The Dark Knight came out, but by the looks of the posts, it seemed like Jack was in the lead. Now that the movie is out, and people have seen it, I think people realized who played the role to perfection.
Now, to be fair, the first Batman (with Joker) was at best a decent Batman movie. I used to think it was amazing, but when I re-watched it, I realized it wasn't that great (Batman Returns was much better, but both pale in comparison to Christopher Nolan's Batman movies). Because I really didn't enjoy Batman, it probably affected how I felt about Jack's performance. Plus, it didn't help that the Joker in that movie resembled the less dark, more colorful Joker (which was not how he was originally created).
I'm not a big American comic book fan, but I know that Batman was originally a very dark story with insane, homicidal criminals. Jack's Joker was not this. Heath's Joker was, and he played it perfectly. Everything that he did, from the way he spoke, to things he did, even the insane dialog that actually had logic to it made Heath Ledger's Joker one for the ages. And he did have that sick sense of humor that made his character, the Joker. Now, I'm not ready to call Heath Ledger an all-time great actor because he hasn't done enough to be given that title, and Jack Nicholson's body of work far outshines Heath Ledger's. However, Heath's job portraying the Joker is an indication of what he could have been. If Heath Ledger was still alive, 10-20 years down the line, this movie could have been looked at as the movie that started his transition into all-time great status. However, now we will never get a chance to know.
So, Jack Nicholson is a better actor, and he always will be (especially now that Heath passed away), but even Jack would know when he was outdone. Heath Ledger's Joker was better than Jack's, period.

I know it's the same role but I can't even really compare the two performances. Jack Nicholson is an exquisite actor but I wouldn't list Batman as one of his most stellar performances, in fact I say he didn't put near as much into the character as he could. Heath Legder (sadly, literally) threw his life into that role, he perfected capturing the madness the Joker is correctly supposed to represent, in a performance that was nothing short of chilling. Every time his character was on screen I couldn't look away; he created one of the most frightening, and also sickly humorous villains in a movie I have ever seen.
I don't think it was just that the script was better and the story was better, and in all honesty Burton is a director I respect probably more than Nolan. As I said before I have nothing but respect for Jack Nicholson's body of work, but Ledger seriously understood the part better and approached it with far more passion.

Heath Ledger.
Because he disturbs me more. 😲
Though I'm pretty fine with either one of them. They're both great actors but Jack seems to add the flavour of "The Joker" literally of the role; Joker. Whilst Heath seems to approach the role with more hmm...more seriously? I thought he played his role extremely well.

I think the the disconnect between Jack's Joker and Heath's Joker come with thier ages. Jack most likely modeled his Joker after the one in the tv series finally given range. That is, wacky Joker that actually manages to kill people every once and awhile. Frankly, I think Heath had better material to work with. He got to see the Joker how he was meant to be.
Also, the poll is missing Mark Hamill. His role as the Joker in the cartoon was spectacular.
