You aren't terribly far off, Issy. they were incased in ice that was melted by milk from a giant cow, if memory serves, but they then lived on actual land.
I can attempt to explain Ragnarok, if you'd like.

In... Indian myth, I think, the world is supposed to be supported by elephants that stand on the back of a turtle.

no...it was african, cause it was a black guy who told the turtle to dive and find mud...apparently there was no earth and everything was water, so they had to get the turtle to dig some mud to above the water?
but no elephantteees =D

Oh, crap, I messed it up slightly.
Okay, when Niflheim thawed, the first cow, Audumla was born. Four rivers of milk gushed form her udders and fed the first frost giant. Audumla began to lick the salty blocks around her out of hunger and her saliva melted them until three days later the first god appeared. This god is the grandfather of Odin.
I'm pretty sure there is a mythology somewhere that states elephants uphold the world and they're on the back of a turtle. I know the universe in inside Devi, but I just mean the earth.

Isn't Ganesh the one created to keep Parvati company and he lost his head when trying to keep Shiva from disturbing her while she was in the bath?

I've read this one too! I think it's one of the African creation myths.

Valhalla, Jormungand, Fenrir, and Loki are my favourite things in Norse mythology.
