It really marred Sony's reputation big time... along with all the other computer companies that used those batteries. Ah well, compensation was in order.

@lockhart how does a warranty stop you from changing software? They'll never know...
well, my warranty doesn't cover software failures and yes, they probably wouldn't know but i don't want to take the risk. i can't afford not having my comp. right now

my first laptop was an Acer, and it's still working great (became a hand me down to my lil sis), my second laptop was an Acer too, and worked great, still is (became a hand me down to my lil bro), the only reason i'm not using an Acer anymore is because i wanted to play PC games, so i'm using a Toshiba now.
P.S If your getting a Vista then you should get windows vista home premium, It's the least faulty version ^^

Go for at least 2GB Ram
100 or so GB HD
Not sure about your processor preference since you don't really like AMD.

^ That's more than good enough if all you're doing is surfing the net and downloading stuff. In fact it's kinda overkill... if that's all you're gonna be doing I'd look for stability over super high specs esp in a laptop. AKA get a macbook 😀
Edit: Oh and for why AMD is cheaper, I heard its because it's less stable? Don't really have experience with it so I don't know if it's true, but I wouldn't risk it.

How...Either I've fallen behind or that is one hell of a price, I would've guessed it was a thousand plus.
Solid amount of memory, tons of harddrive space (for a laptop), modern processor...
The only problem I see is it looks like it has a lot of unnecessary features (HD DVD drive?), and it looks like a lot more than you need.

Does the graphics card output Hi-definition to external displays (aka a DVI-out port)? That's always fun to have.
