Shounen romantic comedies? I thought those were just ecchi series...

Not like I've seen a ton of anime but romantic comedies doesn't usually work well with shounen if you want a serious plot and character development. You'd think with the shounen aspect added to it it'd be obvious enough that it's going to be exaggerated to some extent and have very little chance of a definite conclusion.

A good shounen RC example off the top of my head is Ranma1/2, and that should be the basis for all others in the same category. If you can't handle something along that line then you should switch to a different genre, maybe pure romance or RC, but shounen RC are mostly going to be exactly what you dislike....because that's what makes them shounen RC... 😐

I thought School Rumble was good. Atleast up until towards the end. I stopped reading after Harima was transfigured into King Kong. Or maybe he was a Saiyan in giant ape form. But up until that point it was great.

Shounen romantic comedies? Sounds like major fail to me.

Thats what happened to me in Shuffle!. Ugh. I was told it would "get serious" about halfway through, but I didnt know that meant everyone would get these strange backstories. And it got action-y and stupid. I barely finished it. And I didnt even like the "comedy" to begin with.

Il be sticking to my Shoujo and Seinen from now on -___-

That's the thing though, I was specifically looking for romances (as I recently watched Toradora! and loved it but don't like most other shoujo romances) and I don't see why they needed to do it, the stories were good without the ridiculous shifts. I guess I kind of understand how if they want to bump the rating for shounen they need to add more shounen cliches for popularity, but what's wrong with a comedic loves story?

Honestly I think the only shounen romance anime I enjoyed was Midori no Hibi.

My thoughts exactly. Ai Kora is another descent shounen romantic comedy, by the same author.

It's hard to find a good shounen romance story nowadays on account of new series being too formulaic or having a pathetic male lead.

The only good ones I've read are Midori no Hibi and Angel Densetsu. And it's not because of their romance subplot, but because they are just too funny. Edit: And also The World God only Knows

As for the other shounen romantic comedies, it's usually the same plain boy likes really hot girl, another really hot girl likes him for stupid reasons, and soon almost every hot girl likes him. First, this is really lame, because we all know really hot girls don't like you just because you saved their life by accident or said something really cool. They like you because you are either A. drop dead gorgeous, B. mysterious, C. intelligent & charismatic or having all of the above plus being really awesome.

Gosh, words can't explain how much I detest this genre. And the reason why it's popular is because there are so many otakus and plain boys that relate to the protagonist and think of the story as their own fantasy

I dont' like shoujo romance as well, read one and you're basically read all of them. Though I do like Skip Beat.

Ehhh? I think Yankee-kun To Megane Chan is great!!! And it is a shounen romantic comedy btw. And it doesn't become all dramatic =.=

Someone hit it partially on the nogen: It's because Shonen comedies are aimed mainly at loser Otakus who wouldn't know a girl's v****a if someone slapped them in the face with it.

Another reason why they usually suck, I assume, is that even the mangaka or writer didn't to have the stories to go for so long. I remember reading once that most serialized series are contracted for so many chapters. Thus, the writer's original sixteen chapter story had to be fluffed out to sixty or so chapters.

However, there are a few exception to the rules: Love Hina. Ai Yori Aoshi. Ai Kora. Mx0(though never really resolving the issue of romance - still cosidered a shounen romance comdedy). And, to a lesser extent, Ayu Mayu.

I'm QQing that nobody likes Hayate no Gotoku! enough to mention it >.<

How about Mahou sensei negima? I thought it's just fan-service+romance. I thought i gonna be like GTO, graduated and happily ever after. I stopped reading the manga after the school get attacked. It's just too ridiculous.
