I'm wondering what mangas the (especially on page 1) people are talking about. Sound like To Love Ru and other mangas that are like it. That's ecchi+harem, what do you expect, it will be crappy if you don't like ecchi.
But to bash "shounen romantic comedies" based on mangas like TLR is just silly. Try reading good ones like Mahoraba or Midori no Hibi and then come back and say those things again.

For skeptics of shouned romance and action being able to coexist I would try Mahou Sensei Negima. Mangaka- Akamatsu Ken of Love Hina. Dunno what you look for in romance, I think everyone sees it and criticizes (the actual definition of criticize) differently so it's hard to say. I also would agree that shoujo may just be better if you're a hardcore romantic.
Oh yeah, and To-Love-Ru is more of a comedy,-stop there. Real romance is rarely found in shouned though right? I just became a hardcore reader last year though...

I don't read or watch Shounen RC(manga base), although some donkey years ago i read love hina(nothing to read that time and no internet) untill finish!! i still got bad after taste time to time lol.
The only exception maybe Hayate no Gotoku, but only anime. And the ridiculousness really annoyed me, so i never got to read the manga properly. The reason i watch it because i want to see Hayate's development as a character.
I think most people didn't know that most shounen RC/romance anime out there were/is based from ero/dating sim/visual novel game. I personally never want to know what are they even though some turn out to be good like Fate/Stay Night. Like some one mention on this thread. In anime they took out the good stuff lol

Why do people love F/SN so much.
And what the hell is wrong with anime being based off visual novels? Is there something wrong with with visual novels that I'm unaware of? I agree that anime tend to be far too condensed to be as good as what they're based off, but if you don't' like the comedy part of the romantic-comedy, then just don't read romantic comedies. They tend to play out like gag manga.

You should read this manga. It much better than anime, and ridiculousness(well, big part of it) is also a part of anime. Character development, great story about Hayate past, about real reason of his strength etc. are in manga only.
On the topic, it always amuse my how much of Shounen RC always tend to stray into harem, comedy and World Saving 😀 . Maybe shounen mangakas just can't write adequate and contemporary romance ending. Writing about comedy, ecchi stuff and fighting is different from love and romance stuff.
Or just coz Shounen RC is borderline between plain ecchi and hentai? Developing romance too much can only result into bed scenes and mangakas try to avoid it?

Well in most shounen RC the problem ist that after each character is introduced and some romantic stuff happend there is nowhere to go. they cant come together or else the whole harem point would be over. Thats my main problem. After a couple of episodes you notice where they drew the line how far the romance can go. And every time the romance comes close to that line you just know something will happen to stop it.
I think these heavy plots in the second half of the anime are exactly for that purpose. How often have we seen someone enter the room exactly the moment our couple is about to kiss? To often to count...
so instead of repeating the same stuff again and again they start a story to distract us from the fact that the relationships wont progress further till the last episode^^
But i think there are some Shounen RC mangas worth reading. well not as many Animes unfortunately :-/
Animes, there are good old Ah my Goddess,Tenchi Muyo and Genshiken, there is my favourite Romance Futakoi Alternative (but if you dont like crazy Plot-twists... I dont know if you would like Flying Cyber-Nazi-Squids that shoot Fireballs attacking^^). And i just watched Ore no Imouto a couple of weeks ago, but not sure if this is romance or whatever.^^ (well Genshiken and Futakoi Alternative are most likely seinen not shonen, but nevertheless they are REALLY good.)

I forget the names of the others but just before this I watched one where the main character is in love with his sister and a third rich girl moves in and about 2/3 in the fact that their parents are government agents becomes a major plot point and it turns all actiony. Again?
Akaneiro ni Somaru Saka? That's probably the lowest you can go.

I don't see how Fate/Stay Night even fits in here. It's not really a comedy, just a focused and awe inspiring story (or 3). Fate/Stay Night is an awesome mind-blowing series. The anime is really good, but in comparison to the original visual novel, it sux. Fate route FTW
And when it comes to these thing (shounen romantic ecchi comedies), I'll admit, I enjoy those types of mangas a fair amount. But whether people like it or not, it's just a preference, just like choosing what music we like. Just don't call it "shit" just because you didn't like it.
