The problem with RPG's and JRPG's is that it's like going around in a circle for a long time, then you realize that it's meaningless to play that kind of game type.. Rpg takes ones life away, took mine a few years and Im not proud of it.. Sooner or later you will quit, that's why I don't like rpg because like I said "It's a endless circle". Ofc, It might be fun to play it with friends but I prefer games like "Fable", cuz you won't get so stuck in it after you completed it and you won't spend your whole life on it... And ofc games like left 4 dead, shooting games.. But seriously.. don't spend your time too long on 1 rpg. 😀 Agreee?
Endless circle? Try playing an MMORPG like Flyff >_>' It's a far deadlier, more repetitive circle. Especially when you re-make your character and spend 500 hours leveling it again. OFC i don't play online games much anymore, i love RPG console games though.
Just saying online games are worse for that than normal RPG's imo.

I don't hate JRPGs, but I find them seriously lacking at times.
Take Final Fantasy for example. I won't say much about the earlier installations as I don't remember them (even if I played them), but FFX and FFXII were, in most cases, like animes. FFX was alright, I liked the game overall, but the constant cutscenes somehow pissed me off. It's walk 5 steps, one cutscene. Walk another 5 steps, another cutscene. Zzz.
FFXII introduced a totally different battle system and it was cool for me. And... that's it. The story was mundane, nothing fantastic about the characters, not much of character development here and there. And oh yea, Vaan pisses me off.
As of now, the only JRPG that feels fresh is the Shin Megami Tensei series. Persona 3 was fun, and I am hoping to get my hands on Persona 4 soon.
I like most computer rpgs, but I have a feeling that Bioware has started to churn out subpar RPG games. Take for instance, Mass Effect. Ok, tons of people liked it. I liked it... at first. It was fun for awhile, but the story was insanely short, the gameplay somewhat mundane, and it's super uncreative sidequests. It gets stupid driving that hopeless pile of crap that they call a vehicle over the same planet and same bunker layout for the 2304870293840923rd time. Conversation elements was seriously lacking if you consider Bioware's older games (BG and BG2), and I really feel that the old D&D alignments of Chaos/Neutral/Lawful + Good/Neutral/Evil are better than Paragon/Renegade.
I haven't played much of Fallout 3, and I don't think I will ever play more than the 5 minutes I put in the first time I ran through it. But from what I heard from my brother who has played through most of the game, it's more of it being not as bad as people thought it would be, than anything else.
Computer RPG games have really taken a step back in terms of story-telling when you look at the games from the past years. Planescape: Torment had one of the most compelling stories and fantastic dialogue, same with the BG series.

I do hate most of the new jrpgs, specially the ones that arrive to the west, some really good jewels have been lost because of noone translating them, old school is another story....
games like final fantasy have become more and more pathetic, and many franchises that tried to evolve ended up just killing the game itself
There's nothing like an old linear rpg to enjoy the story and some nice mechanics as in CT and i can die happily playing
We could become very good friends.
I rather dislike a great many new JRPGs, they are just not as good as western RPGs lately. Though, given my great distaste for Square-Enix's marketing strategy (spam remakes and sequels until the fat lady kicks the bucket... okay, mostly for what they did to the Dragon Quest series, it is a deep seated hatred) and flat, cliche characters that may be altering my judgement.
I can't sincerely remember a JRPG that I've thoroughly enjoyed like Mass Effect or KotoR II that was made within the last 5-6 years. I can't even find solace in strategy games like Fire Emblem anymore either.
(Shin Megami Tensei isn't the same since they went the Persona route, I liked Persona 2 but 3 didn't make it for me.)

I play them both, I haven't even heard the term JRPG and WRPG until a year ago I just judge it based on the enjoyment of the game not some preconceived bias. I like both art and gameplay styles in JRPGs and WRPGs.
They do undoubtedly have their pros and cons obviously.
Last WRPG played:
Mass Effect - Enjoyed
Fable 2 - Enjoyed but not as much as Mass Effect
Last SRPG played:
Mana Khemia - Interesting take on the battle system and had some other fun elements. Story was mediocre.
Valkyrie Chronicles - Great game, really fresh gameplay and the difficulty was just perfect. Story wasn't bad either.
Disgaea 3 - I'm a disgaea fan so I liked it but this game is a niche type game so you'll either love it or hate it.

Yeah I know what you mean sadly most JRPGs on the market are rather the same and has too much the feeling Final Fantasy (Not as good as Shin Megami) Like you the only real experences I remember is usaully like Mass Effect or the Fallout series nothing can really grab me anymore.Thats the reason why I am just waiting for Suda 51 to create a RPG to get rid of all those chlices that make me hate most games. Now that I think of it the only games that I remember that is a JRPG is Chrono Trigger the old Shin Megami series and Metal Max.

I've been disliking RPGs in general lately. It feels like the genre's lost sight of what they were originally trying to do.
Let's look at the Elder Scrolls series, for example. The second game, Daggerfall, was incredibly ambitious, ridiculously huge, and essentially about as close as you could get to a pen and paper RPG in a computer game. The world was larger than Great Britain, and your actions had consequences that could make it impossible to complete the "main" story line, though thanks to glitches and whatnot, the game wasn't perfect. Morrowind was also a good game which added a lot of political intrigue and culture to the series, but at the expense of a lot of freedom and features of Daggerfall, which was a shame (you can't lie and plead innocent in court if you've committed a crime? no mounts? no wagon? no ship? no houses? no banks?). I always thought that the next logical step for the series would be to continue the improved accessibility of Morrowind while adding back in many of the old features to make the game more complex to experienced players while being fast enough to get new players, but of course Oblivion didn't do a very good job of that. You're forced to play the good guy in all but one of the guilds (of which there are a fraction as many as Morrowind had) and overall it just felt shallow and incredibly dumbed down. The series has gone from "do whatever you want in our ridiculously huge and deep world" to "save the world and do some sidequests".
For another example of a disappointing WRPG, Fable was an RPG with a good concept that was executed abysmally. With its linear world and story along with its puerile humor and combat system, it just felt contrived and a bit stupid.
Playing stuff like Final Fantasy I and III on the NES makes me really disappointed with how JRPGs evolved as well. The old games essentially had you doing whatever random quests came along, and the player had to be extremely prepared and had to use their brain to get through the game. Now, rather than allowing you the illusion of freedom of the fantasy world you're in, they have "deep" stories with characters whose motives you have no control over, and the games are easy and mind-numbing.
Sorry for the rambling. I'm just an old-schooler who is continually disappointed with the current gen of games and lack of ambition or creativity. 😢

i know some as well. but honestly i don't think there's anything wrong with the genre itself either. i actually can't play a game that's not a JRPG nowadays, cause i don't like games without plot. i know it seems like that's what anime, manga, movies, books, etc. is for, but a game sometimes need a story to follow to make sense of the mayhem behind it. in which JRPGs come into play with the plots and characters. granted it has become repetitive though now that the companies are being more money hungry instead of worrying about actually dishing out something good.

On my part, it's thank you for the rambling! xD I actually agree with most of what you've said there. I can't vouch for the Final Fantasy part, though, since I can't play any that aren't 7, 8, or the MMO due to owning a PC only.
I mean, there's a freaking ton of new things coming out, and I find it very disappointing that, after playing them, I just want to go back to Baldur's Gate. xD

I don't hate any game just because of where it came from or what the genre is... If I like it, I'll play it. Often, JRPG's have plot, which I really appreciate in a game.
Final Fantasy for the win.

I enjoy JRPG but i find their getting a little too cliche
I enjoy JRPG's as long as they dont have the FF battle system, that really irritates me. The last JRPG I played was the .Hack//GU games and I really liked the battle system they used for that

Like many others who posted here... I don't really know people that 'hate' them.
I know people that don't enjoy reading or actually getting into a serious plot, and thus the only games they play are action or an action rpg that has no story.
I do like how JRPGs have been expanding past the FF battle system, simply because I used to get bored as hell when in combat, but would stick it out merely for the story and the character interaction. I'm also digging how JRPGs are slowly starting to incorporate multiple paths/endings for people to take. And on the opposite side, we have RPGs that are beginning to incorporate more story and less hack and slash, which is another big plus. I'm betting most people would prefer hybrids of the two anyway.
Of course, 'real' RPGs like the Elder Scrolls series are becoming more popular too, which is awesome (Fallout 3, GTA IV, etc...) By real, I mean you actually take the role of a character, rather than just watching a story unfold.
