I believe that the US government defines someone as "black" if they are 1/16 (someone check that please). I always though it was an oddity that having one great-grandparent could "define" your entire life.
I haven't heard that; as far as I've seen, people are asked to self-identify their race (on government forms, school surveys, etc.).
I know that there is a similar rule for becoming an officially enrolled member of a Native American tribe (might not be 1/16, but it's a pretty small amount).

Hrm, touchy subject.
I tend to dislike most stereotypical black culture here in the United States. I never liked rap music, or sagging pants, or chains, or being a false gangster. Every time I saw somebody dressing and acting like a gangster it kind of made me sick.
I don't think that's really racist though, because I have no problem befriending intelligent black people who don't conform to the stereotype, so it's not really a genetic superiority thing. I do tend to write people off and judge them instantly if I see gold chains and sagging pants. I just hate the whole gangster culture.

beans & chilli & tortillas = hispanics
black, straight, layered hair = asians
rap music and graffiti = african americans
accents = british
i know that these stereotypes are misleading and untrue, but sometimes i find myself being prejudice towards people of certain races due to these moronic generalizations 😔
i'm asian btw

So what you're saying is people that like rap music, sag their pants or wear chains are not intelligent. 😮 I get it. You're not racist; you just let preconcieved notions based on superficial characteristics dictate whether you deem someone intelligent or not. No, not racist but ignorant in its own right. :]
*Btw the music that stimulates my brain the most is rap. I like or at least everything except metal/heavy metal but I haven't come across any music that discusses human right violations like genocide and child soldiers or philosophies like hedonism or secular humanism (and no not in that way.) :') But go right ahead and keep making descions and passing judgements with such cursory reasoning. As they say ignorance is bliss.
Also, do you realize that you are equating hip hop with black culture. :/ And if that's what you think is all that makes up black culture you are severly limited 😔
Edit* in nicer terms please know that everyone who subscribes to aspects to the hip hop culture isn't ignrorant. >3>
EDIT: I just noticed i had started this thread 🤣

That just means that you don't
really care for racial matters. : D
I don't really care for racial categorising.
Unless you count human races as biodiversity...

Hah, look what you started ^_^
But in reply to the music thing, yeah, as in any culture there's good points and bad points. I generally don't like hip hop, r&b, and rap. But some of it can be quite good. I think part of that is the whole language thing: Japanese is very staccato, and works well with the fast, steady beats in rap. Chinese for instance, is a lot more fluid and generally sounds better with slightly slower melodies.
I'm Chinese by the way. Also, I'm particularly interested in this thread because I grew up in a very racist "WASP" part of the US, where death threats were (not exactly common but) part of of my school life becauses I was the stereotypical straight A student.

Call it what you will, but how a person acts says a lot about them. Do you sag your pants for yourself, or to fit in? Do you wear gold chains for yourself, or for others? I live near the ghetto and I have seen so many 'false gangster' wannabes that the mere sight of one makes me ill.
Also, do you realize that you are equating hip hop with black culture. :/ And if that's what you think is all that makes up black culture you are severly limited 😔
I never equated hip hop with black culture, I equated it with the stereotypical black culture - there's a big difference. The media tends to shove these stereotypes down our throats. I have respect for those who don't try to fit in by conforming to the stereotype. How many people do you think would act the way they do if not to act cool? For the most part it's a front.

Also, I wouldn't write somebody off just because they listen to rap or hip hop, disliking rap is simply a personal taste of mine. I write people off when they act like wannabe gangsters.
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, I just noticed your reply now.

There are literally hundreads of races within the human species, it's just that we only identify with the ones we can obviously see. Most races are only defined by very slight physical differences caused by difference in habitat. There are difference in race, such as teeth arrangement, skelton and mucsle structure (some people of african origin have longer tendons in their legs so they can run faster) and obviously skin colour. So race actually exists, it's more we have attached predjuice to them that is unfounded.
I'm of European decent, but I'm from Australia and we are very multicultural. Though there are lots of racist people, we tend to be relaxed about the issue. Most of us don't care. The biggest problem is cultural difference rather than race. I'm not racist, I don't really care, I see people of every race every day. It dosn't factor into how I judge them (I judge them on their clothes, appearance and behaviour) which is a normal reaction as far as I'm concerned.
On that not, Austalia has had issues with race, especially whenever we were in a war with someone, then people of those races were discrimated against. Their are still issues with Aborginals, as their are negative images in the media, but I feel that is more of a feeling of frustration amongst "white" people, as we are not allowed to fix the problem but they aren't doing alot to fix the problem themselves. We can't change the past only make a better future. I'm sorry about what happened and I have great respect for Aboriginal that succeed and hold on to their culture and the elders who are trying to stop the problems. Money isn't going to fix it, they need to have some pride in themselves and stop the self destruction.
As for race, well I find those of Asian decent frustrating sometimes because they tend to hang out in cliches, and they seem to be the largest population at uni. I just think that coming to a university in another country would warrant some attempt to try and interact with everyone else. That's more of a behavioural problem that I know some don't do.
The other thing I have a huge problem with is how other races view "white" people, which in many cases is racist. I remember seeing Obama's inaugration? and the reverends speech, were he mentioned the main colour races and said something along the lines of "and the white people will stop hating".... excuse me. Why are you grouping us all together? I know I'm doing my bit by not being racist so I would appreciate it if you did the same. I don't want to be judged because I'm white. Stopping racism is a two way street. What needs to happen is that people need to define and connect with their culture rather then what colour they are.

I don't like Malays.
There, I said it.
Even though I'm half.
They are full of backstabbers, gossipers, and what not. Their race will never rise...EVER. They are even racist amongst themselves! Like Malaysians don't like the Malays in Singapore etc. And they bring it her to Australia (but I heard Perth doesn't have this problem). I once started a fight with all the Malay boys in my year by telling them that they suck (they were bullying my friend and me in the process) Every Malay boy in my year, 'cept my friends who understood me, was after my head >_> I'm not saying that All Malays are like this though...just the generation before mine and so on. 😃
O_______O;;;; wow Scyfon. just wow!
Btw, do any of the malay boys that you mentioned come from Brunei?
and yes, bout the racist thing, it's Sad BUT..True. sigh
Everytime I hang out in London, the malays dont even tegur sapa sesama sendiri. Even among Bruneians or malaysians....they just..."STARE" at each other.
But I get along with Malay malaysians and indonesians better than Bruneians. I have to admit, Bruneians are conceited and speak highly of themselves.
