I have never read a yuri, and am rather new to this genre. I would prefer a plot that doesn't solely focus on the "yuri" aspect that has a good mix of things going on, but I will take whatever I can get.

Girl Friends would be a good start and to be honest almost anything made by
Morinaga Milk could work.

Well.. pretty much.

Haru Yo, Koi contains some shoujo ai, but at its core it's about love in general.

Aoi Hana focuses on more relationships than just the "main", they involve plenty of other interconnected characters including heterosexual relationships.
Sasameki Koto delves into subplots that don't involve yuri though the entire conflict is about yuri love.

My all time favorite yuri: Husky and medley for having such a fairy-tale outcome, even though it is based on a real-life girlxgirl story.

You can find a lot of gems in the oneshots too, some favorites of mine are:

Nightmare after school
Graffiti
Dusk, orange, the blooming flowers
Forever girls
Present (kurata uso)

thanks Aoi Hana, and Sasameki Koto look interesting, also why are there such good ones in oneshots, but don't get published? 🙁 or does it just take a very long time

I would suggest you:
Octave - interesting plot, distinguishable characters, really nice art, lots of not-so-heavy drama, developing sexuality, overall it really swept me away;

Anything by YAMAJI Ebine: actually so far I've read Indigo Blue (my favorite one, with mature characters and very conflicting situations, angsty relationship), Free Soul and watched the live action of Love My Life

Flower Flower - if you like light not overally dramatic plot. =)
