Resurrecting an old topic because it is too cool to resist:

I usually stop reading a manga if I don't like the way the couples are going to end up. For example, despite the fact that everyone just loves the way the main coupling in Fruits Basket ended up, I was really apathetic towards

Kyou

and didn't especially want to keep reading a manga where he'd be the lead. (I found him to be a fairly stereotypical shoujo male lead and I didn't really pity his situation all that much since there were just too many characters to pity in that series--the manga wanted you to pity them all!) So, despite initially being a love triangle, I figured out pretty quickly that he'd be the lead and stopped reading.

I'm only bothered when I read until the end hoping for a certain couple and the manga gives me hope that my couple will happen, but in the end it doesn't. I feel sort of tricked/massively unlucky when that happens because I've actually taken the time to read to the end instead of stopping as I'd normally do.

Vampire Game

I honestly thought Ishtar was going to end up with Duzell and not her bodyguard. I know she always only had eyes for him, but he never, ever saw her that way while Duzell really loved her. Not to mention, Duzell was the secondary lead, so it made sense that it should be him. In the end, we never got to see much of the development of Ishtar x bodyguard; the series ended, then we got a timeskip and somehow they're married and have kids! Duzell MAJORLY got shafted in that series. Not only because of what happened with Ishtar, but in the fact that he disappeared ...and then got reincarnated as Ishtar's son. Laaaame.

In theory, I didn't mind the guy the main character ended up with, but there needed to be a few more volumes--at least--building that relationship up in order to make it satisfying. The main conflict of the manhwa was whether or not the best friend could accept the way the main character ended up, so the reader was lead to believe that this was the intended couple. Even though I probably preferred the guy she ended up with, it was a totally lousy way to do it.

Hot Gimmick

I agree with what others have said, of the 3 guys, Ryoki was the best choice. I think the real problem with this ending isn't who she ended up with, but rather that neither Ryoki nor Hasumi changed enough from the beginning to the ending of the manga to make the reader feel especially good about them as a couple. Their biggest flaws--that Ryoki was pushy and a bully, and that Hatsumi was spineless--were still there in the end, albeit perhaps softened a bit. Had either character changed more, I think this ending would've been less objectionable to most people. It'd be OK for Ryoki to still be a bully if we could feel confident that Hatsumi has the ability to put him in his place when necessary. Similarly, it'd be OK if Hatsumi was still spineless if we could feel confident that Ryoki wouldn't continue to abuse her meekness.

Parfait Tic

I'm ecstatic to see how many people here dislike the Daiya pairing since I thought that everybody was happy she chose him since he was oh so sweet and kind. Barf. I completely hated the direction this manga took and the way "perfect" Daiya's character was developed. He was an unrepentant playboy who "didn't know what like meant" and refused to have a girlfriend because of it and then gasp! all of a sudden he's in love with Fuuko?! It was so random since up until that point, the series had carefully been building up the Fuuko x Ichi pairing. There was no rhyme or reason why he would suddenly decide he liked her when he'd rejected her before. Not to mention, until he decided he liked Fuuko, I'd started to forget about Daiya as a character. It truly came out of nowhere.

Even worse, the fact that he was a playboy didn't even seem to matter once they got together. Daiya ended up having eyes only for Fuuko and knowing exactly what the perfect thing to say or do in any given situation was. It was total character manipulation. A playboy who'd never had a girlfriend before should have completely lacked all the interpersonal skills necessary to be such a great boyfriend. Not to mention, how did he suddenly get rid of his wandering eye?

Daiya became completely unrecognizable as a character in order to pair him off with Fuuko--he went from being a character with some verve into cookie cutter bishonen love interest. Not to mention, poor Ichi got majorly shafted in the process. The storyline meant to get him out of the picture so Fuuko could end up with the first guy she ever liked (stupid shoujo cliches!) was completely moronic and frustrating. Fuuko became incredibly passive and refused to chase Ichi, instead choosing to cry about it every other page (so Daiya could comfort her--double barf!) and Ichi became incredibly passive as well, going back to his ex because Fuuko said so, even though he wasn't all that happy with her. To add insult to injury, the mangaka made him look extra pathetic since he never got over Fuuko; even in the side story focusing on Ichi's now grown up little sister, Ichi still seemed to have feelings for Fuuko, despite the fact that years had passed and she was still happily together with Daiya. Lousy, lousy manga. All of it could've been handled so much better than making all the characters lame just so we could get the standard shoujo storyline out of it.

I don't think this ever happened to me before. Mainly because I look at the cover picture (since it usually feautures the main couple) and try figuring out who the heroine will end up with, then accept the fact that she's going to go to that guy.

I totally agree with you!!! I mean

the pairing of IchixFuko was built up from the time the cup showed up. So I really dont get the point why would the mangaka make all those things to make Ichi so hateful just so that she could end up with daiya

Code Geass:

Ouhgi and Viletta. No way!

I didn't like either of those characters, not to mention their relationship!

Only works for some series. I remember for one long harem/triangle type series the heroine shared the cover with a different guy and the MU cover pic wasn't with the guy she ended up with. (This may have been an ongoing series or something.)

I think, generally, the manga-ka tries to generate more love & interest towards the guy that the main character ends up with. And mostly, I think it works.

But I have to agree on what brid said about Vampire Game. I felt the same way. It's why I just stopped reading. Didn't make any sense to me whatsoever.

Same thing with Tokyo MewMew. That was a real "wait, is this the real ending?" moment.

I still think Ichigo was meant to be with Ryou.

Tokyo Mew Mew. The main's love interest is so boring/bland while Kish is so adorable and interesting.

Vampire Knight

I know it's not finished, so I still have hope, but I desperately wanted Yuuki to pick Zero and not Kaname!

Crossroad

Akai-sensei all the way!! I couldn't believe it when Kajitsu chose Natsu.

I have a problem with these female protagonists who choose their siblings 🤢

EDIT: Oh, and Paradise Kiss

George. Enough said.

I agree with everything said about Parfait tic. I mean, wth. I was so pissed I just dropped the manga completely. I think the mangaka just didn't know what to do anymore.

Love Hina -- I hated Naru totally. Sarah, Shinobu or Motoko is far more suitable to be Keitaro's wife.
Ai Yori Aoshi -- Kaoru Hanabishi should have ended with Tina, Mayu or Chika.
Kannazuki no Miko. -- I didn't like this pairing.

With parfait tic I read some where that when the manga-ka asked her editors or helpers who they thought Fuuko should end up with they all said

Ichi so the manga-ka said she'd do the opposite. Pretty lousy way of making up her mind doesn't seem she took into account the feelings and personalities of those involved ! plus Ichi got no closure at all which was very unfair for him it was like the manga-ka was punishing him for some unknown reason it offered the readers no benefit seeing him such a way at least Fruits Basket gave Yuki Machi Ichi got no one.

Like, basically every Harem manga I've ever read...especially Ichigo 100% srsly, I always want the main character to be with the sweet, Glasses wearing girl.

It never happens. >:-(

Unless you're talking about Shoujo, in that case I have no comment. 🤣
