Pandora Hearts - Along with the main character's personality mask and crazy "past", the story, as a whole, is really twisty.
Karakuri Circus - If the English translations could go further than what they have now, people would see that the main character's

past life had a suicidal end in anger that transcended through a liquid...

Tenkyuugi - Sephirahnatus - Main character's past is sort of tragic, but he does wear a mask of some sort when he sees his friends.
Black Cat - Ex-assassin. I think the anime adaptation is okay as I couldn't really get into the manga's artwork style so I didn't read too much of the manga. ^^; DGM's Noah reminded me a little bit of the Chronos numbers.
Nabari no Ou - His personality ended up that way because of his past.
En Passant - His depressing personality is also like that because of what happened in his past.
Ningyou Kyuutei Gakudan - The male main character has a past that he keeps to himself and wears a mask full of smiles. I don't think his past is that "dark", but this is a work done by Kaori Yuki, the queen shoujo mangaka of tragedy. The main character still lost his home and a certain family member to something bad.....
Izayakaku - Guy loses family at a young age to war and is a witness to it. Becomes neutral as part of a bargain deal, but can he stay neutral forever? Is he enjoying his neutrality or just simply running away from the truth?

Gangsta

Both of the main characters have heavy, dark pasts... Though we haven't got to learn much about them. A really good read anyways.

I'd like to add some more to your list. (I would also second Tsubasa: RC and 07-Ghost, but I figure you must've read those as they're as popular as some of the ones I mentioned.)

Kazan - I really recommend this story to anyone who likes a good adventure manga (that doesn't rely on those stupid shounen tropes). As for the "dark past" part, the main character's childhood contained some tragedy and hardship, which is why he's like that for most of the story.

Stigmata - Main male character has a happy-ish personality, but he has amnesia. His "past" was sort of dark. (May seem typical of a story in some way, but I enjoyed the interaction between the two main characters. Probably the only shounen manhwa I can read from start to finish without feeling bored or lost.)

Tripeace - Main character also has amnesia, but his past was dark (hint: opposite of this title). This is pure shounen complete with the unnecessary fanservice and long battles. However, the development of Nana's outcome is interesting to follow as I'm curious as to how he's going to end up in the final volume.

Kamui - This sort of reminds me of CLAMP's X (X/1999) because of the name and it'll definitely remind you of it, if you ever read X. Yet, their stories are really different. Unlike the main character of X, the main character of Kamui reminds me of Gundam Wing's Heero Yui. Kamui's main character had some hardship in his past, but he definitely grows as a character throughout the story.

Um.... I wish you a big happy reading? ^_^ Haha...
