swords are stupidly useful in anime, Swords can cut bullets, swords can cut planes.
guns are worthless as nobody can aim, beams CAN hit the target if they aren't blocked or evaded.
but the only thing that can stop a sword (or beam sword) is another sword.
Not really fond of swords. If you are going to use a medival melee weapon scythes, halberds, morningstars, which are neater but aren't generally as stupid as swords > all, particularly the katana.
Big problem with cowboy bebop for example is the big bad was impossible to take seriously or care about him in any way because he had an out of place medival weapon in a space cowboy anime.
the F*** does a samurai sword do in a space cowboy show?
Swords are the mary sue of weapons. no personality wins fights because the writers are bad.
Indiana jones has an example of proper use of swords in a gun fight, he normally uses his melee whip, but he ran into some guy with swords who looked to be a challenging fight, and he simply shot him.
swords in any show after 1850 have no place. and are stupid and poorly written. especially if they give the sword stupid abilities like cutting thru mountains, planes, planets.
if you want to give them a stupid melee weapon give them something that's actually cool.

Sword win case in point - Kenshin no Keishousha - Armies of the world are defeated by Sword wielding aliens. (that is not a spoiler just the first couple pages) There is a novel getting tranlated by fans up to vol 2 Ch1 in engish out of 5 volumes released.

You know, this rant is silly for a single reason. Everything in the first paragraph can be applied to absolutely everything that happens to inhabit similar space in regards to realism. Bare hands can do all of that, as can loud noises and supercharged breasts. Swords are just another set of means of physical combat in this instance.
Plus really. You want more believable, useful weapons and you mention scythes? A scythe is a farming implement with almost no practical applicability as an actual weapon. It has no place as a weapon unless the setting is massively unrealistic and/or it has magic powers up the ass.
Swords are nice, nice guns are nice. But really... give me something like the B.L.A.D.E in Vanquish. Thrown in the armor too, cuz I want that as well.

Swords - I find there are all these techniques you could learn and with a gun it's pretty much good aim and eyesight.
When it comes to watching animes/reading mangas I find swords more interesting.
Now if there was a Zombie apocalypse or something I would have a bayonet and a sword.
Overall swords win 3/1

Sword.... Definitely sword....
With a gun, you can run out of bullets but with a sword, it doesn't really break so easily, depending on how it was made...
Besides, in anime, I find swords more interesting than guns....

Yeah, but if you don't know how to use a sword you're just gonna get yourself killed, but with a gun, as long as you know How to hide and shoot, you'll survive..

With no prior knowledge of swordsmanship, if I handed you a sword and told you to cut me in half, I'd be in half pretty quick. Or at least bleeding a lot...
With no previous experience of firing a gun, if I handed you an unloaded handgun, some bullets, and a magazine, I wonder how long it would take before you could shoot me.
Also, saying "it's just point and shoot" is like saying "Driving is easy! Just put gas in the car and it goes!" No, it's not that simple. Yeah, I get what you're saying. "'Gun X' will be just as powerful no matter who fires it", but still, if you think it's just "point and shoot", you've never fired a gun.

That's true, but think the rant is more on the level that guns are frequently used as a "common denominator" to gauge how powerful everything is. Which sometimes backfires, like in Persona 3 when Takaya
shoots and kills Junpei and Shinjiro with a single bullet, but if you're fighting him in battle, his gun is suddenly worthless.
It's because in battle they're prepared for it, and the bullet only grazed them, you say? Bullshit. A gunshot wound, no matter where it is, is a serious injury, and if you're lucky enough to be skin-scratch "grazed" by multiple bullets, I suggest you play the lottery because you're one lucky fella. Besides, the mere fact that he HAS a gun that is capable of killing them with a single shot should at least envoke a bit of fear in SEES. You know, like it did when Aigis was "hacked"?
Then to top it off, in the opening of "The Answer" you see Aigis opening fire on Akihiko. Just like... full-auto, all ten fingers, no holding back.
WHAT? WHY would Aigis, given the history of guns within this game, FIRE TEN SEPARATE GUNS at one of her friends?? I mean, really?! With the concept of how strong a gun is completely up in the air like this, I don't even know what's what anymore! Or is Akihiko just that amazing!? He can dodge TEN guns firing at him with perfect accuracy!? To take things further, Aigis is strong enough to break through chains, walls, or whatever because she's supposedly super strong, but she still uses a gun to fight? Why? The only logical answer is that the gun is more powerful, but that can't be it because...
Oh, my... I just got a headache.
Anyway, his rant is in a topic where swords and guns are being compared, so forgive him for comparing swords and guns. That said, his rant is still silly.

Cutting though mountains, planes and planets isn't cool enough for you!? What, do you want something like the crooner sword in Rodger Rabbit, that does nothing but sing Frank Sinatra tunes? That's pretty cool, right?
