I tried not to make my title very misleading. I've been told I make very misleading titles.
Anyway, I have a question:
What's emo?
I know it sounds kinda dumb but it's just I've heard multiple definations for emo.
Some say it's just a type of way people dress. Some say it's short for emotional. Some say it's depressed people. What is it, exactly?
well, youve seen "spiderman 3"
when peter parker acted all different?
there you go, thats it, at least an awkward imitation of it...
at least he didnt go and slit his wrist

Umm... Wikipedia explains a bit about it.
But, this is probably what most people associate it with:
"In recent years, emo, in the popular media, has been associated with a stereotype that includes being emotional, sensitive, shy, introverted, or angsty.[18]19[20] It is also associated with depression, self-injury, and suicide."
When in the hell did that become emo? That was me all the way from sixth grade to graduation. Except the suicide thing. Whatever happened to emo just being associated to REM and Radiohead and the like. 🙁

Huh? REM and Radiohead emo? I have never, ever heard that before. When I think modern day emo band I think more along the lines of Fall Out Boy and its ilk.

REM is like the original emo band. Since then, the scene has degraded horribly. Now we got crap like fallout boy and 30 seconds to mars.

I thought emo the genre originated from the underground emo-core bands of the late eighties, early nineties? I mean, if we're just going by introspective lyrics here, The Cure was there before, and The Smiths seem more dark.

You seem more into this stuff than I am. So if you say so then I'm not going to argue. REM was the earliest band I've heard called emo. So maybe they weren't the first but they came around in the late 80's, early 90's when the emo genre began making itself known

Emo is not short for emotional its a music genre but now a lot of people are calling depressed people who cut themselves 'emo' which is completely false
If you wanted to know about what people call the 'style' then it would basically be skinny jeans, a tight band t-shirt, lots of eyeliner, black nail polish (or other dark colors), converse and black hair but everyone will probably tell you something different since most people make there own version of the 'emo style'
Recently the emo style has become very popular and now kids are dressing that way just because they think it looks cool so nowadays most ‘emos’ are posers

from what ive heard and read from the net. emo does stand for emotional, and it is a music genre that described bands from the late eightees that inputted emotional lyrics in their songs, most of the bands were pretty hardcore bands. that were emo core was formed. right now the genre has evolved and there are tons of bands out there that label their music as emo. the variety is so wide now that subgenres like screamo have been created. bands like silverstein and finch are emo bands that ussually incorporate growls in their songs, some bands like saosin and circa survive showcase high pitched vocals, and some pretty popular bands these days like my chemical romance, fall out boy and red jumpsuit are all considered emo. the people who like listening to this type of music, dress up like their idols and there comes the explanation for the attire.
that was a pretty long explanation of what i believe is emo.
by the way my favourite bands, coheed and cambria and the mars volta are both progressive bands that have also been labeled as emo. goes to show just how much the emo genre encompasses.

the irony of your statement is that My Chemical Romance doesn't see themselves as emo. Atleast the band the emo kids adore isn't as stupid as its main fan base. lolz anyone.

I think that the whole emo attitude is a messed up one. It's almost narcissistic. All the angst and stuff. That attitude is a universal one and for it to be identified with just one subculture or musical genre is the epitome of conceit. Grunge talks about the same stuff, it just has a harder edge. Blues is far more depressing, but even more indie than emo (musically speaking.) It's a little annoying.

Posting R.E.M. as Emo is offensive to R.E.M.. R.E.M. is a college rock group with a heavy political emphasis. That's about it. They may sing love any more than many other groups, but love isn't the emotion emo is talking about.
