emo is a subgenre of hardcore punk rock that started during the 80's hardcore scene. the genre has gone through 3 revivals or waves, the first wave being when it stared in the 80s with bands like husker du and fugazi i guess. second wave emo occured in the 90's with jimmy eat world and weezer. 3rd wave emo is the current wave for the genre and the music sounds completely different than the previous two waves though one can still hear the hardcore roots. 3rd wave emo started unfortunately in my home state of new jersey probably in the late 90's and i guess the main stream music industry decided to use it as its new cash cow and thats how it became so popular, cause i doubt many people heard of the genre before my chemical romance got big. emo stands for emotional hardcore since its hardcore music where the lyrics tend to be about how the band is depressed over something.

for those who tl;dr, its a crap music genre for kids who like to shop at hot topic

You seem to be pretty knowledgeable about this - can you explain to me, then, the difference between emo and shoe-gazer? I know there's a difference and I'm pretty sure that shoe-gazer is closer to grunge but I've heard early Wheezer be called shoe-gazer before and I wasn't sure if it was just a mislabel or what.

never heard of the term shoegazer but they seem to be the same thing

shoe gazer is another way of saying emo since they always look their feet.

No, you're wrong. Shoegaze is a sub-genre of alternative rock, and has practically no association with Emo. Shoegaze is a combination of dreamy pop/psychedelic rock with a lot of distorted guitar effects and fairly muffled vocals. Shoegaze also isn't associated with a certain type of person the way Emo is.
I've no idea where any of you got this idea that they're both linked.
