always be truthful or justified lies?

Polite bump.
Always tell the truth, of course. Any other choice of action is just lying to yourself. The crucial part is how you display the truth. You can do it in the blunt way, or easily settle the truth in. Even though at times both options are painful, at least the latter shows that the person cares about your feelings and at the same time doesn't want to withhold anything back from you.
