Ha - i call it the Blank Look Effect - i get the same thing as well when i talk about my fav novels or anything else in that same vein -

the Blank Look Effect is usually brought up as well by the other person

i.e. Hey, whats that you are reading about? and when you proceed to explain that other person gets that glazed look in their eyes that shows they are now thinking - wtf did i do to myself? 😉

Funny thing!!

This just happened to me THIS Morning..
It was with my lecturer, Alan Slater...I had an appointment meeting him in the office this morning and..So basically this is how it goes:..

**Alan: **You want me to check your essay?

**ME: **Yes plz, I got it all in my Memory drive.
Takes out pendrive and plugs it into Alan's CPU

While we were waiting for the pendrive to load.. Lots of manga pictures (in thumbnail sizes) stored in my pendrive were shown on the CPU screen<<

**ME: ** 😲 Oh dear!!

Alan: I see you put Cartoons in your memory drive! Are you fond of it?

ME: NO NO!!! Those are mangas..it's just my Hobby. Naw. Plz Stop looking at the CPU!

Alan: Tries to control laughter

ME: What?? That's anime..it's like a Subculture in Japan!

Then he was liek trying to hold him laugh the entire time..

@Savantsage

I know!! It's embarassing! I'm PROUD to be an Otaku but...having people see the MANGAS that I saved in my pendrive embrasses me..

I'm so glad I just stored some Onepiece and shoujo mangas in it today..
I often put some hentais in my memory stick.. I'm so blessed he'd only seen my shoujo stash!

😮

With me, it's more like:

Me: You know manga? Those Japanese comics?
Friend A: Eww
Friend B: That's stupid
Friend C: Yeah, that's totally what a comic nerd would read
Me: You should try it
Friend A: I don't want to be associated with you anymore
Friend B: I don't know you
Friend C: Who are you again?

That's so mean... These people shouldn't be called friends...

I stopped talking to them and now they just complain I am a bad person for not talking to them.

If I actually told people I know I read it, then it wouldn't be a secret hobby, would it?
Honestly, when I do tell people, they tend to already know what it is from other friends or they read it themselves on the sly (it's amazing the number of my friends who read it behind closed doors).
So, it's more like:

Friend: sneaking up behind me What are you doing?
Me: Reading...
Friend: Reading what? grabs from my hands You read manga?
Me: ...sometimes...
Friend: Me, too. Have you ever tried... (or) Oh. So, anyway...

Yes, they all know the term manga and it's never been confused with mango (at least for as long as I've known them).

Believe it or not I am one of the "popular" kids at school. At my school we don't have cliques and all the "cool" kids are all nerds. (i.e. me.) 😀
So when Manga or Anime comes up everyone knows what you're talking about. And for the ones that don't, either don't care or it wouldn't ever come up in a conversation anyways so it won't matter.

normally, i don't talk to people who don't know about manga. but when i am talking about a manga and they come into the conversation late, they will be like "that sounds like a cool plot. what's it called?"
"[insert japanese name]"
"oh...manga" >_>
and then they just ignore the conversation for a while 🤣

you can always revive the convo with some brilliant jokes about Italians 🙄

I usually avoid mentioning my interest in manga since people judge you so fast when you mention it. Even my best friend looked at me like I was crazy and thought I was a pokemon fan when I mentioned that I read manga.
