I usually don't talk to other people about manga. Most people I've been around are aware of the term manga so I've never had to explain it to anyone. I do remember telling my roomate.

me: I don't read that much! Well...maybe...mocking tone "umm sometimes I stay up late at night working on my computer and um reading and yeah so if it bothers you..umm..."

I NEVER talk about manga with my friends, and the reason is obvious:

1- I am mostly into Yaoi stuff and if my friends have a glimpse of what I am reading, they will have a heart attack! 🤣 and of curse they will never talk with me again. 🤨

2- they think manga is for kids or teenagers. when my close friend who knows me for ten years, heard I am reading manga in my free time, just nodded and gave a look like I had committed a stupid, shameful act which doesn't suits me... O__o to be honest I am still pissed at her for judging me like this.

3- it is totally waste of time. people will get the wrong idea, you will be branded as a person who still lives in her childhood dreams, you will be mocked and at the end you will feel like shit.

no, I prefer to keep my mouth shut and keep reading my stuff whenever I want, wherever I like. 😀

Almost all my friends really enjoy reading manga, but with people I don't know, I just don't talk about it with them. Why? Because they'll probably judge me. And I hate people who judge others.

Speaking as a guy, I'd say it would be FAR worse to be caught with hentai than regular porn. All guys understand regular porn - we're really, really open about this too. I remember one time in my class, a girl was telling her friends a story involving a guy and porn. Basically everyone around them overheard the story. Me and my friend just stared at her blankly and told her that all guys watch porn. She got grossed out so we asked every guy in our class and sure enough they all readily admitted to it. Hell, some guys I know watch porn together (that's kinda weird though).

Hentai on the other hand... lol. Definitely harder to explain. They're would probably tons of questions like "How the hell do you get off on cartoons!?!?!"

Funny thing O.o..I just got into some mindless arguements over a Youtube video on porn issues in 4chan with some persistent male youtubers. I guess, porn is a very sensitive issue when it comes to saying how 'lewd' it is. But yea. I know guys do read porn. I do too.. as the member of the.. coughopposite sexcough

I would say downloading hentais are much safer than downloading porn off the internets. Plus, Manga/anime is part of a subculture nowdays.

Haha yeah, I've had quite a few porn discussions with girls (rarely more than once with the same girl though - once is usually enough for them 🤣 ). It's really hilarious seeing their faces getting progressively horrified as more and more guys own up. Of course there's always the one guy who claims that he doesn't - he always get's ridiculed by the guys and praised by the girls.

Yeah, hentai is probably safer to download - not safer to get found out about though, lol.

i hanged some yaoi posters on my room walls like [/m]okane ga nai[m]. ok in poster they are just hugging and do nothing else. my roommate knows it is yaoi and isn't bothered by it. i wish she had some interest in anime/manga then i would corrupt her totally

I have given up. My best friends understnds it and reads and watches anime herself since we got into it at the same time, though my obsession is deeper than hers by now, lol. I have one other friend who kinda browses anime and we occassionally tak about it. My other friends either have a vague idea what it is but don't read it or just don't get it no matter how much I explain.

With my new flat mates last year the convo went something like
Me: I love reading.
Flatmate: Really! What genres.
Me: Mainly Fantasy, some sci-fi and manga
Flatmate: Manga?
Me: Yeah, like the book version of anime.
Flatmate: Isn't that porn?
Me: No...that's one genre of manga called hentai
Flatmate: So you read cartoon porn?
Me. ...No.

I gave up and this year moved in with different people so not yet had that converstion gain. It's not even as if I read anything shameful like hentai, yaoi or yuri (sorry fans). I avoid talking about manga unless it's brought up by somebody else then I'll readily enter into a convo about my favourites. I only have one girl in my aikido class I regularly talk with about manga since she's a yaoi fan girl and is intent on corrupting me.

The pen is mightier than the sword...and considerably easier to write with.

Around here, everyone knows what manga is, even if they don't like it or have never read it. Most of my friends like it, several of them have decent collections, and a couple are even more hardcore than I am. One person has 500 legally-bought manga, while I only have 300. My other friend will be staffing a con on new years.

Since I moved here, I've heard "Oh, you like manga too?!" more than ".....What's Manga?"

almost all my friend in college know what is manga, read a scanlation manga, and watch anime...(i'm lucky)
i think in Indonesia, manga is already well known, especially naruto..
