well...
i have had very few such conversations.
Me: *reading berserk
Friend: what're you reading?
Me (In a kinda distracted tone): Berserk...
Friend: is that a comic?
Me: yeah...
Friend: so what's it about?
Me: kinda... eh... welll... *hand him an issue.
he starts reading, i watch him, he looks up.
Friend: so it's pretty much this big fella with the sword running around slicing up monsters who try to rape shit?
Me: yeah...
Friend: AWESOME... 😀
I am pretty lucky with my friends =)
Most of them arn't very interested, but most of them accept it.
eccept for one who grew up with a sailor moon fan-girling little sister...

Quite lucky indeed. 😀
Here's an example to emphasise how people think of "mango" when they hear "manga"
I had the following conversation last week over the ICQ with a friend from Russia:
(so, I translate 🤣 )
Friend: What were you doing?
Me: I was reading manga.
Friend: Mango?
Me: No... Why would I read mango?... And how?
Friend: I don't know. So, what is this?
Me: Japanese comics.
Friend: Oh! Send me some.
Me: Ok.
(other delates aren't important to this matter)
I sent him some yaoi covers. 😛 🤣
And he wanted more. 😃
Hrodulf and Bjornolfr, you will not be forgotten.

I've grown up around people who might have heard of anime... maybe... but manga is a foreign concept to them. 🤣 So I got myself into manga and then had to try and explain to my family what exactly I was reading...
My mom is accepting of it but its funny to listen to her try and pronounce the Japanese names for everything as I explain them to her 😀
My sister thinks I'm weird and thinks manga is weird, she's an avid book reader and when I showed her the manga I had bought she was totally confused as how to hold, much less read it. But I'm trying to get her to read my favorite manga...
My brother just goes along with whatever I tell him about manga as long as it has something to do with action (he has a short attention span...)
My dad does karate so he is more familiar with Japanese stuff so when I got my first manga he just looked at it, fiddled around with it until he was holding it right and then commented that it was Japanese stuff...
Haven't really told my friends about it yet though, my one friend did find out and told me that she would never be able to read manga because of how different it was (having to read right to left, back to front...) I wonder how my other friends would react...

When I met most of my friends, they didn't know what manga was....now one's crazy about Naruto, Ceres, and Laon, another loves Magical X Miracle and V.B. Rose, another one reads Cardcaptor Sakura, Bleach, Pandora Hearts....I know, I'm a genius, thank you very much (giving myself airs? Never heard of it).
My parents, on the other hand...
Mom: What are you doing?
Me: Reading manga.
Mom: Oh, is that Shogun Beat?
Me: That's Shojo, and no. I'm reading--
Mom: Could you help with the dishes? Then you can go back to your comic.
Me: yeah, whatever...
and with my dad...
Dad: Stop watching that cartoon in half an hour, ok?
Me: Ok, sure (goes back to watching Ouran--this is during a twincest moment).
Dad: .....hey...
Me: Um...what is it?
Dad: Why are those girls acting that way around those...what are they, twins?
Me: Oh, Frick.
I then attempted to explain Yaoi manga. Sorry, dad.

They're comics. From Japan, if people ask. End of story.
You just confuse people when you try to explain that it's "printed anime," or something, because then people will automatically associate it with well-known stuff like Pokemon or Sailor Moon. Honestly, some people in this thread are so retarded when it comes to explaining things that they deserve the ridicule.

Usually like this...
Person: What did you do today?
Me: Read.
Person: Read what?
Me: Japanese comics.
Person: -changes subject due to the lack of interest we both share on the current conversation-
It's hard to be proud of liking manga nowadays, due to certain obnoxious fans. I'll let people know I read it, but I don't obsess. I'm keepin' it classy. Or try to. 🤨

Well... In my highschool (Year 7 class at least-since they are all asians?), everyone generally KNOWS what manga is but there is this random group of manga addicts and they keep going on about yaoi and yuri and no one knows what it is and when we ask they say: 'oh, you don't need to know what it is, it is seriously violent'.
Then, my friend found out what it was and told me & now heaps of people know what it is... Yet those 'manga addicts' like other mangas too and I like them too (I am considered as an otaku?) BUT I don't want to talk to them about manga stuff or say I read manga(though I really want to) since I would be called some weird lesbianish/ retarded girl...Who reads stuff like about homosexual people... 🙁
(Though I think BL is okay...)
Anyways, once we watched anime in Jap class and it was Hunter X Hunter (And I was thrilled- secretly, that is) BUT then my bff started going on and on about how much I loved it (damn it- I shouldn't have told her! She was the only person I told about me loving manga and stuff) and everything started laughing...And then, heaps of people started commenting on how they didn't like this anime (I was getting seriously pissed off)- some people are just shojo freaks and I erupted and screamed at everyone (ESPECIALLY at some girl who kept complaining about how boring shounen animes were and how Vampire Knight anime was SO much better!) 😮
But at least people in my class KNOW what manga is... Though they think anime isn't gross but they think manga is! THEY need to get the fact that manga= non-video anime- frozen anime stuff!!! But they won't listen to me(actually, I am sort of too afraid to tell people stuff like that since too many people think manga is gross).
For example: Some girl thinks all manga= generally pornish- hentai, yaoi, yuri etc. 😔
Simply another normal human being...

Back in my old town a lot of people had no idea what manga is (although now that there are some volumes appearing in the library more people are starting to know about it). Anyway a lot of my friends that I have known for a long time have slowly been adjusted to me reading manga and if they ever see me reading any they all just shake their heads and mutter about me reading Japanese comics again and why I don't read something more normal then change the subject.
But now that I've moved and meeting new people here there seem to be a lot more that know what manga is (kind of...)
I've found a lot of the haters are actually geeks themselves, only they say they read real comics instead of this fake Japanese crap.
Also don't you hate it when people interrupt when you are trying to explain what manga is.
Eg: I was walking home from manga/anime club and ran into my friend who asked where I'd been:
Friend: Where have you been?
Me: Oh just at a club I joined.
Friend: What club?
Me (really reluctant to tell her): The anime club...
Friend: The what?
Me: Well -
Person who was walking home with my friend: Oh! (jeering) The Cartoon club! 🙄 They’re a bunch of people who play dress up and watch cartoons. 🤣
Now whenever it comes up she refers to it as the cartoon club and won't listen if I try to explain otherwise. 😮

Ok, so I spoke to a friend about this...
Friend: So you read anime?
Me: No, I read manga.
Friend: Isn't anime the same thing?
Me: No, anime is the cartoon version.
Friend: But isn't made from a manga?
Me: Not all the time, but most of the time yes, but it's not manga.
Friend: But if it's made from a manga, then isn't anime, manga?
Me: No...manga is the comic version, anime is the cartoon version. You don't call an anime, manga, and a manga, anime...
Friend; What? I don't get it.
Me: 😐 😐 facepalm

How do people react when you tell them you read manga?
Or try talking with them about a manga. It usually goes like this for me:
Me: Ever heard about manga? I like reading it.
Person: Mango?
Hahaha that was me when my friends first told me about it. I was like "urr did you just say mango?"
But I tried it out and liked it then I wanted to spread the manga love so I toldmy other friend about it.
Friend: manga what's that?
Me: Japanese comic book
Friend: Oh so like those pokemon stuff?
