Sister; Whatever.

That's so nice... I wish I had friends like that...

It's not so much that I have great friends; what it really is is that there's always at least one or two "terminology" freaks and self-styled otakus in the different groups I hang out with. Which leads to curiosity (secret fans) or at least, knowledge (manga, not mango). Also, quite a few of my friends are asians (first gen born in US or even born in asia).

stuff like '....you read comics? ever heard of books?' lol.

The biggest thing i noticed is that people don't understand a manga can have an adult or complex story...they think because it has pictures it's for kids only.

I only discuss manga with people that actually read it themselves.

It is isn't it? Even the most complex manga convey the theme through mostly drawings. The whole manga, 20 century boys could have finished the whole story under 200 pages of words in a book.

the only mangas that can be used to conter-point this issue are mangas with little or no words and uses complex pictures and drawings to convey the story. BLAME! is one of them. The pictures and drawings are arts.

Me: I like reading manga and watching anime when I have spare time
Random person: (has a blank expression) Huh? What's that?
Me: They're Japanese comics
RP: You can read Japanese comics?
Me:.....
Basically most people I talk to haven't a clue what the hell "manga" is. Some do and say: "Oh those porn Japanese comics" that leaves me shocked of course. Some do consider any manga porn which disappoints me really but it's fun to tease them and keep them going that it's a hentai. 🤣 A few of my friends like it and read it and my closest relatives know what it is although my parents always look at me strange like they have no clue what I'm talking about. I guess another reason is that I don't proununce it "mahng-guh" I say it Man-Gah with an a emphasis than u so crazy otakus bother me most of the time correcting me which really bothers me. I got off subject...

I don't really tell other people that I read manga unless they tell me that they read it first. But if they ask me what manga is, I usually tell them that manga are "Japanese comics". Because I'm not a snob and, hey, that's what they are. That hasn't happened all that often though. I'm not a very good manga evangelist. 🙁

I usually avoid mentioning my interest in manga since people judge you so fast when you mention it. Even my best friend looked at me like I was crazy and thought I was a pokemon fan when I mentioned that I read manga.

I actually brought the OG Pokemon Red and Blue games to school for about a month or two once (this was in like junior or senior year). People looked at me like I was crazy and I just laughed. Convo went something like this:

Person: Pokemon? What are you like 10?
Me: I wish I was, school is kicking my ass. Remember how awesome Pokemon was in third grade?
Person: You nerd
Me: Buttons clicking
Person: ........ So what gym are you at?

1 week later

Me: Are you playing Pokemon!?!
Person: Shut up.
Me: What are you like 10? 🤣
Person: Buttons clicking
Me: ...... So what gym are you at?

Haha there was a huge Pokemon craze in 3-4 grade at our town so everyone is guilty of having loved it at some point.

Well, I manage to convert two people to manga. I talk about manga and anime with them a lot. When talking with someone who doesn't know about manga I simply say Japanese comic, since that's much easier for them to comprehend.

reads manga during pause on collage
A: What are you doing?
Me: Just reading some comic.
A: Oh... you read comics?
Me: Yeah, this one is good. A Japanese comic.
A: Japanese? rise an eyebrow
Me: Aha, they are called manga. Here see for yourself.
hands him Negima volume 8
A: Uh... hey, what the hell? It's backwards... o.O

That's the point where they return it back and label me as "that guy who reads weird stuff". Well, they are all grown up people so they respect that even though they always give me that weird look when they see me reading manga...

Just because people are in college does not mean that they are "grown up people". There is just a lower likelyhood or are maybe a bit more mature then when the person was in high school.

Quote from Savantsage

With me, it's more like:

Me: You know manga? Those Japanese comics?
Friend A: Eww
Friend B: That's stupid
Friend C: Yeah, that's totally what a comic nerd would read
Me: You should try it
Friend A: I don't want to be associated with you anymore
Friend B: I don't know you
Friend C: Who are you again?

I guess you know if these friends will hang you out to dry or stand by your side. 🤣 😳

Quote from Hermit-chan

@Savantsage

I know!! It's embarassing! I'm PROUD to be an Otaku but...having people see the MANGAS that I saved in my pendrive embrasses me..

I'm so glad I just stored some Onepiece and shoujo mangas in it today..
I often put some hentais in my memory stick.. I'm so blessed he'd only seen my shoujo stash!

  😮

Hahahah lol, what if he saw some yaoi or yuri!!1 LOL!~! 🤣

I don't think Hermit-chan would be able to face that person for a while, and would probably avoid the person. And if it was hentai, it would be something that would probably be poked fun at for forever.

That's so mean... These people shouldn't be called friends...

I stopped talking to them and now they just complain I am a bad person for not talking to them.

It probably would have been better to tell them that they offended you when they said that to you, even though it was a joke. Although, maybe that would leave you open to telling them that you don't like being teased or made fun about it, which might leave you vulnerable (which is why you didn't say anything and just ignored them).

Quote from Battlerenji

What usaually happens is
Person: Hey what are you reading
Me: Raise the manga to reveal Gintama
Person: Gin taema
Me:No Gintama it is manga
Person:What is manga and why are you reading it backwards
Me:I am not
Person:Yes you are
Me:No it is Japanese
Person: You speak Japanese
Me: No it is translated
Person: Then why is it backwards?
Me: It isn't backwards
Person: *looks inside and says its a funny book
Me : No it is a Japanese comic
Person: No it is a funny book
Me: No it isn't
Person: Is that guy a Superhero
Me: No
Person : Oh, so why is he so strong
Me: Please don't make me explain
Person: Fine. leaves

If the "Please don't make me explain" was because you just wanted to continue reading your manga in peace, maybe it would have been better to say, "Why don't you just Google the world 'manga'?" I guess if the person is interested enough though, he or she will find it again, maybe looking around a big bookstore.

500 posts! 😀 🙂

I hardly ever talk to anyone about manga. Not that im ashamed, because some people know I read manga and American comics, but because they dont usually make good conversation. About the only one I talk to about manga is my brother and thats just to ask what series he is reading and if its any good.

After having tried to explain it once or twice, it's just too infuriating so I just don't anymore.
Most people basically just jump to the conclusion that manga are all stuff like pokemon and sailormoon. --"
So now I only talk about manga to friends who read them, and my best friend who doesn't read them but understands that they are more than Pokemon and Sailormoon.
But most of my friends aren't that avid manga readers (in other words they only read bleach for the girls and naruto for the boys) so our conversations are normally like
My friend: I just read Bleach over the weekend!!!! It's really cool!
Me: I know! But I can't believe Ichigo's rescuing a girl... again
Friend: ...huh?
Me:... which chap are you at?
Friend: 40
Me: -
-"
Me: Anyway, I was reading yesterday, it's awesome!
Friend: really?... uhm... (and slowly drifts away while i continue yakking to myself TT_TT)
