I don't quite see the pull...

Right, long story short- I decided to bookmark this manga for later reading as it seemed good, and expected something entirely different from what I got. Not exactly in a bad way, mind you, but I just thought I should state this in case my opinion got biased.

At the start, it was easy to get into, and I liked it so far, but sometime around Vol 2 things seemed...much more 'blah'. Don't get me wrong, the humour was funny, the characters were alright and the art was very good.
It's just that the twists and whole heaven and hell thing just...didn't seem to need to be there. I think the manga could've been just as good -even better- without them. It certainly held the potential.
The author was too obvious in the supposed 'hints at conspiracies' and a lot of 'twists' could be figured out beforehand if one just paid attention. To me, it looked like the author was trying too hard to give a sense of mystery and just ended up making characters act out of character, a rare feat for their original creator.
And the fight scenes- do NOT get me started on those sorry excuses for fight scenes. I can barely call them fight senes. More like awkward-shots-of-glowy-spirit-auras-plus-swords-and-demons-being-cut-in-half/disintigrate d. Maybe I've been spoiled by manga like Rurouni Kenshin, but, dude...Dong Young beating up Bi Wal for his perverted ways had more action than scenes of that so called 'fighting'.
Also, I don't see the originality, or creativity everyone seems to be raving about. Especially with things like 'four guardians', 'white tiger', 'ice general', the heaven and hell matchmaking etc. I almost gagged at the cliches. Hello? Do you people read any fantasy all? These are ideas that have been used for years. I admit it was a good move to make the Princess run away, and be disguised as a boy etc. but...to me, that wasn't creativity. That was simply someone putting their own spin on a tale as old as time (pardon the Disney reference).

Look, I hate to be a critic, I'm usually ridiculously nice in my reviews and I, just like everyone else, hate seeing someone diss my favourite manga, but I need to state my opinion too or I'm going to stew over this thing all night.

I honestly couldn't bear to read it any more sometime around Volume 4 and just skipped straight to the ending- and what I found in those last two chapters before all the side stories was MUCH BETTER. It ready smoothly, the characters seemed more real, I even spotted some improval in art. It almost made me want to go back and finish the manga- almost. It seems the author and drawer improved over time, plausible since the series went on for quite a while. I'm glad, it put me at ease after all the frustration at the beginning. However, I refuse to go back and continue reading. Sorry, but that's how it is.

Since I didn't read the entire manga, I don't believe I have the right to rate it, so I'm just leaving my words here. Maybe I'm just cranky today and I'll like it years later or something. Maybe you all see something I don't. Maybe I just don't like Manwha when I compare it to Manga like Rurouni Kenshin, Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro, The Violinist of Hameln etc.

Oh, and one more thing I forgot to mention:

I felt like this series was very shallow. No emotional affect on me at all, no deepness, just a lot of sparkles and cliches and empty statements. The only time I even felt a spark of feeling was when Mao didn't run away when Dong Young was seriously in danger and tried to protect her, and even that faded after the 'why didn't you run away like usual' line. I don't know if this is a tendency of Manwha or just the ones I read, but hey. (Of course, there are manga like this too, but I find them far and few between)

Kind of Boring Actually

This series was okay. I almost finished it, but once I got to the end of volume 11, I just couldn't bear it anymore. The plot was pretty typical, and nothing too interesting. There wasn't a lot of development between the two main characters, which kind of took away from the whole romance aspect of the series. The main character was okay. She was typical, and of course she was dumb as in many shoujo mangas/manwhas. All in all, it was an okay read, but it was kind of boring.

OMG I am in love with this manhwa, it's so good!!! Dong Young is so cute and I feel for her I would have done the same. She's really naive but that's what makes the story so funny. Bi Wal is just awesome, he's so handsome, and mysterious. You start wonder why he really is so into Dong Young. The plot is really good I was hooked after the first volume. Sorry that my review suck, I didn't really explain much >_<.
This manhwa is really good and you should read it. Bi Wal is super hot, the art is wonderful and it's one of my favorites!!!

It's not an incredible manga that takes your breath away, but it IS very interesting and original. The art is well-done and clean. It looks more like Japanese shoujo manga art than Korean manhwa (manhwa characters usually look edgier and their eyes darker). The guys are hot! The storyline is interesting and cute and has enough action and suspense to get me flipping the pages as fast as I can. It doesn't go overboard on the romance and has kept the humor light. The mix between school life and fantasy is wonderful. It is a manhwa that entertains without trying too hard. The characters are also very likable and a good amount of screen time (or is that page time?) is given to each of them. Usually what makes and breaks a manga for me is the heroine: this manhwa's heroine isn't exactly kickass (like Kyoko from Skip Beat) but she has got a similar aura to that of Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club- She's dressed like a boy, oblivious, and has a guy hanging around her all the time annoying her. She's also pretty relaxed for someone who gets demons and ghosts going after her. Though you don't really get to see her fight, she can be surprisingly powerful (check out volume 6 for an OMG! demonstration) - well she IS a princess of heaven after all.

Perhaps I came into this with my expectations too high because I really loved Demon Diary, but aside from being a decent read overall, I didn't find Angel Diary something to write home about. It started off well, and the basis premise and characters were interesting. But the authors unfortunately didn't do a very good job of developing said premise, because it turned into a giant, convoluted mess. New characters popped in left and right, relationships and feelings changed on a dime and everything became draggy, overly melodramatic and confusing. On the upside, things picked up in the final stretch and the ending was rewarding, and I enjoyed most of the romance between Dong Young and Bi Wal.

It's not another disappointment from the authors of Demon Diary. (:

I really love it, the story is very interesting and I love the whole "ancient" aspect of it all. The characters are also very unique as well, I can't wait till the scanlation finishes this series. It's truly very good. ^^
