Hikaru meets many people, and has many adventures while on her trip for the legendary gem.
You'll see a bunch of the other comments saying "it should be longer" or "it should be longer than 2 volumes". While its true it gives you a feeling of "there should be more" since it serves as a prequel to the anime it accomplishes that purpose perfectly. Since the anime is the "more" you're looking for.
I can't believe that this manga can be soooooo short! It's has such a good plot and the art work is very fantastic! And i think it should be a shounen manga with long story, many characters and become very famous! Such a pity ( i think the main character should be a guy not just a little princess likes to cry and wore man clothes )
Art is good, characters are interesting. But the story ends right when things are going to get really juicy and big. As it is, you can appreciate the story in itself, but it's actually a prequel for the related anime (that was fansubbed by Anime-Kraze with the title Otogizoushi). Watch the anime, you'll know the end of the story and what becomes of the characters ;) (eh, in this case you'd better reading the manga AFTER watching the anime anyway, because the final chapter of the manga has a big spoiler for one of the characters' identity). Nice reading overall. Pretty Heian clothes, decent action scenes, and the plot (manga + anime) is intriguing.
The art is decent for the first few chapters and improves towards the second volume. The storyline was alright, but I think the artist or director could have done a better job by expanding it further than two volumes. There were some good issues dealing with ethnography and society roles. Overall, I would have preferred this series to be longer.
