Okay, so apparently this manga has up to 22 volumes in Japan. 22 VOLUMES! And here I only have 3 chapters translated. I’m tempted to say 'What the heck?' because this series is starting out really fresh, but no, we've better things to talk about.
Like, for example, in the lonely 3 chapters I’ve read, the art style is quite good. It has a slight comedy or slice of life feel to it, and the characters have very distinctive appearances. There’s Konno the tall girl, Fumino the fatty, Yasomura the dangerous one, Mahara the give-no-fucks one and Asahi the protagonist. Their personalities are also as distinguished as they can be in 3 chapters (I’m gonna keep repeating this in hope of some Japanese translator out there pick up this series).
Okay, let’s get serious. The reason I picked this series is because I’ve never heard of Naginata. Apparently it’s a sports that resembles Kendo, but replacing the sword with a very long stick with a curving blade at the end. Of course, in club practice, the whole thing is made of wood. And like Kendo there’s protective gear. Unlike Kendo, you can hit the shin with the Naginata and earn points. I thought the concept of the sport is fascinating, and was hoping to learn some from reading the manga. And from 3 chapters, the author did a pretty good job at displaying its gracefulness and the basics of Naginata, which is why I seriously want to read some more.
I don’t think I can give an accurate rating based on just 3 translated chapters, but what there is so far is very good. I’d easily rate just these chapters with a 7 or 8, if not slightly higher. Check it out if you’re hesitating. It’s 3 chapters, what have you got to lose?
