Description
From SuBLime:
Tired of accusations that family connections got him his current position, Ritsu Onodera quits his job as an editor at his father's company and transfers to Marukawa Publishing. Once there, he is assigned to the shojo manga editorial department - something he has no interest in and no experience with. Having sworn he'd never fall in love again, the last thing he wants to do is work on love stories. To make matters worse, it turns out that his overbearing boss, Masamune Takano, is actually his first love from high school.

Worth checking out

I've read this manga years ago and recently revisited it. The story has grown on me to be one of my favorites. What keeps the story going is the deadline the author has set for Onodera to fall in love with Takano. I like that their love isn't linear, but it's interesting to see what curveballs the author throws at you. The storylines aren't out there but reasonable. Personally, I enjoy having a main character who works hard, but yet has a hard time defining his life. The other pairings are nice. The other relationships don't draw me in the same way as Onodera's and Takano's relationship do.

Also, I hope the author takes the time to develop this story further even after Onodera falls in love just like with Junjou Romantica with Misaki and Usagi as it becomes more known within their circle. I want to see how everyone else views their relationship especially when Onodera is an heir to a publishing company.

Review after reading 15 volumes.

I absolutely loved it at first. The art starts not great but I liked it so much it didn't bother me (the art gets much better around the 10th volume I think)... The possesive Masamune, the cute but determinated Ritsu, the professional setting (I am an adult so prefer reading about adults rather than students). But it gets worse... the characters go back and forth... after a while you can tell there will be a sex scene within the next few pages, the pattern repeats so much. There is almost no focus on work anymore. The love rivals are all super nosy and annoying (besides An). I enjoy the sex scenes, I get they might make some people uncomfortable though. I once got uncomfortable too, when Masamune pushes Ritsu's head during a blowjob and makes him choke (somewhere in later volumes, just a warning)... But otherwise I enjoy the dominant and forceful lover Masamune as it's a fictional setting and we know Ritsu enjoys it actually, just won't admit it. Yeah, this is the biggest problem actually - Ritsu just won't admit it. The manga could be half the volumes. Still, I enjoy reading it and look forward to the 16th volume (waiting for it to release in my country).

Yukina and Kisa I don't like at all. I thought it's going to be such a cute and unique pairing but their parts are so boring to me. Just lots of annoying misunderstandings because Kisa can't speak his mind. He gets better at it at last though.

My eyes was hurt. This is rapey as hell. The same stuff with assualt, molestation, and kinda sex with using force. Plot was a little bit better but it's just getting boring as hell. Takano is an abusive jerk, molester and I trurly hate him. Their love story is toxic. Kisa and Yukina are okay.

Interesting setting but too much filler episodes

I try to compare manga on an overall impression. Did I have fun reading it? Yes, a lot. Is it the best manga I have ever read? Sure not.
Ofc. there are mangaka that have a better drawing style, but I wonder what standards people have that call the art "horribly ugly", it sounds more like they dislike the mangaka itself. It's true that Nakamura-sans earlier drawings still have lots of flaws especially when it comes to body proportions (hands are her biggest problem), but you have to start somewhere, and you get better over time. That's what happens here. Her style is simple and unique and works with screen tones more than playful details. I really like her variety of facial expressions she uses in her art, it makes the characters feel alive. The only flaw there is that she uses the same strokes for shocked faces and aroused faces, which results in making the characters look like they suffer during love and sex scenes (lmao).

I really like the setting of the story. Ofc. it's not a 100% realistic try on the life of a publishing company, but it gives you a certain impression on what is happening behind the scenes, something I never really thought about a lot. Those parts of the story actually are the ones that made me interested into the manga the most, sadly they become less and less present the more the story proceeds, since the relationship between Onodera and Takano has a bigger focus (well, what did you expect, idiot). That would be okay, if their relationship actually would progress, but it indeed is just a big filler part like others mentioned, they go back and forth, and while there was interesting stuff at the beginning, in the later chapters you just get bombed by random side characters you aren't really interested in. As soon as one competitor is gone, the next is already waiting, and this gets annoying pretty fast. Some sidestories are okay, but she really should start focusing more on the main plot line: Onoderas career path, overcoming the problems in their relationship and not just f*** the problems away and escape again the next morning, and also talking out the problems of their past relationship(that got a little ruined by giving away too much too early, so it's hard to make it work now). Dragging a story because of popularity will only ruin it in the long run, and it's not like she has no ideas for new series once this one ends. It also could still continue once they get together, that doesn't mean it has to end at that point. Like, make Onodera choose between staying at Emerald or leaving to take over his fathers company and therefor get separated from his new friends and Takano.

Characters, hfff...I like them and I hate them. It's hard to give away a wholesome opinion because they got changed a lot over time, in a pretty obvious way. When you go back to the very first chapters, you will recognise that Onodera Ritsu basically was a completely different person compared to what he became in the later story, and that's not due to a change in character influenced by Takano, he simply got a complete rework.
When he first entered the company, he was introduced as "I once was a lovely boy, but now I don't give a damn f*** for love and such stuff, only my career is what matters!" - and I really liked that attitude. He was manly, he was sexy, he was aggressive, and he knew what he wants. I mean, just go back to the scene when he got told he has to work in the shoujo section - he got f u r i o u s. But just some chapters later, he got completely changed into a shy and insecure guy, not much different from what he was as a teenager. Him saying sorry all the time even became a recognisable character treat, which def. wasn't the case from the start. His body language, his way to dress (cool shirts->cute cardigans), everything abruptly changed. I don't know if that was a decision by the author or by the company ("make him cuter and more loveable so girls go crazy!"😉, but it kinda killed the fun out of their relationship, with Takano becoming the only one dictating the pace.
Takano...I like his character design a lot. I like tall characters with black hair, and his glasses, even tho they felt a little weird at the start, really compliment his character and highlight his change in personality work vs private (I really like that serious work attitude).
He really is an odd one, which makes it hard to predict his actions and intentions. But the more you learn about him, the easier it gets to understand him. He is not flawless, dating Onodera in the past just because he needed someone to let out his frustration on. But because he was such an oddball, he got sucked in by his kindness and got imprinted on him in a kinda obsessive way.
I really like their relationship, I just wish it was more story-driven than "showing the characters in several fanservice scenes interacting with each other". The chapter when they visited the grave of Takanos grandmother had such a completely different atmosphere than the fillers before, and it'd be great if that could happen more often.

So much to the main story. The side stories...I like most pairings, and because at least one of them has the same working place, you get used to them faster than in Junjou Romantica (it seriously took me ~5 chapters in JJR till I got that there was a second pairing and it's not just a time jump with the same main character lmao).

I really like Hatori&Chiaki and would have liked to read more of them since I think a story with interactions of mangaka and editor would have benefitted the overall setting, but sadly they got dropped pretty fast. I have absolutely no clue about what raping scene people are talking here tho, I don't remember any of that in the manga, but it sounds like it wasn't part of the actual plot and more like a "kink spinoff" since the manga story already has a completely different confession approach.

Kisa&Yukina is also a nice pairing, tho I think they got too much screentime with too less plot, most of it is insecurities about love and age, and it goes back and forth. I also have to say: I absolutely hate it when there are artist characters and their art is never shown. This is nothing you need to "make me imagine myself", just use it as opportunity to go all in and try new stuff!
What positively surprised me was that Nakamura-san smh. managed to make Kisa look cute and adult at same, which can be very hard, but it works perfectly. If only he had more serious plot, he could easily become a real mc. Just imagine a full spinoff that focuses on Yukinas book store as setting, I'd really like that.

Yokozawa&Kirishima....I. Don't. Get it. At all.
I don't know if I missed something, but suddenly there's a chapter with Yokozawa who desperately was chasing Takano and now lives with a guy who has a daughter. No explanation, nothing. Sometimes it sounds like they date, sometimes it doesn't. Just wth is this and where do I get the context from?

Overall, I had a lot of fun reading Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, and I am looking forward to more. I just hope the story won't get dragged on with more useless fillers and focuses more on the main storyline.

Focusing on the main couple, my main complain with the series is that it goes on for too long. i understand built up is good and we don't just want to see Onodera fall for Takano again so quickly, but why do we have to sit through sex scene after sex scene without having the satisfaction of having Onodera having 100% confirm, not only to the audience or to himself but to Takano, that he's in love?

Long Drag

My main problem is with Onodera and Takano's relationship. I can very much side with Onodera (believe it or not) and I completely understand his stubborn reluctance to accept Takano. He was and always will be a flawed character. And that is 100% ok. This is who he is and that's what makes him his own character. HOWEVER, the thing that has been bothering me is Takano. In this manga, Takano consistently forces Ritsu to have sex whilst justifying his actions with sweet words. It sucks how many yaoi mangas consider this the 'norm'. I understand that Takano is supposed to have this horrid personality, but his actions are just gross to me sometimes. I recall people commenting on how nice it was to finally see Onodera and Takano make love for once - where both parties were consenting. Nakamura uses sex as a way to keep readers interested, but eventually, sex isn't going to fill in the large emotional gap in the story. This is what many readers crave. Growth. The only way the author brings some emotional depth is to add another side character to instigate things.

The manga has been dragging for far too long in my opinion. Too much attention being put on side character a,b,c etc... What started out as an interesting and somewhat bittersweet love story, has soon turned into an endless repetition of the same formula.
Characters complain at work > Takano forces Onodera to spend time with him > Takano forces sex > Onodera denies all feelings > Next day, wake up at office with a funny gag. Repeat.

This formula will be repeated until the day counter "runs out". I just seriously hope that we get to see Onodera and Takano share a heart to heart without the comedic slapstick or Takano's angry impulse taking over. (Which is very scary) I feel like it's unfair for Takano to ask for Onodera to change so much when he himself has so many childish anger problems. For once, i'd like to see an ending where Onodera and Takano laugh and flirt with eachother like a healthy relationship. Maybe see Onodera fluster Takano. But I highly doubt that would happen.

As with the other two pairings, I seriously cant bring myself to care for Kisa and Yukina. It was cute and fun at first, but I feel like their storyline ended a long time ago. Kisa loves Yukina's face bla bla...I actually leaned towards Hatori and Chiaki's relationship. This story got a lot of backlash for Hatori's rape of Chiaki. BUT many people don't consider the fact that the rape part of the story was NOT WRITTEN by Nakamura herself. The rape part of the story was written by a different writer within the editing team.(A sick one :/) Once this is taken into consideration, Hatori and Chiaki are quite good together. Hatori, in my opinion, is a hard and complex character to properly write. He is an old-fashioned romantic at heart with a stern and serious personality. I'm just very sad that the writers of SH didn't know how to tackle his character without making him rape his lover. Hatori had the potential to be one of the more sensual and deep semes in all of Nakamura's work. I would LOVE to see their story written in the hands of a more experienced writer. I still love these two and its a shame to see how many people completely hated Hatori despite not knowing what happened behind the scenes. Even the scanlators flat out rejected their story without researching.

Yokozawa's relationship is actually pretty nice so far. Can't wait to see him eventually take the role of "mommy" lol. I think this did good for his character to show that he s not just a hollow, 1-dimentsional character.

Better than Junjou Romantica, but not great.

On the one hand, I like this better than Junjou Romantica. Mostly because I don't dislike any of the couples all the time (which happens with 2 of the 3 in JR).

On the other hand, it's still basically JR. Which is fine, except I get tired of a few recycled plots. Also, the "extremely dub-con and basically rape except that much later the dub-conned guy says he was into it" thing is awful. I really dislike it and it's so prominent in this authors works.

So, yeah. There are worse things. With this, like with JR, if you're not 13 or really drunk, maybe don't read it.

I've always hated this mangaka's art, mainly because for me it was so hard to follow
but once you get used to it it's not that bad anymore. Also this kind of tells how
manga industry gives everyone a chance lol xD

The main character can be a bit annoying from time to time but I guess that
there's no other way if you want to drag manga for so long;

The story is something I've definitely seen a lot but it's amazing how good this
artist is at teasing us with sex scenes and other love scenes yet keeping
their relationship like it is for sooo many chapters. I think that is an amazing
ability.

For now, I would recommend this for everyone who just wants shounen ai/yaoi
that gets you hooked and has a good amount of drama.

(seriously doe, I wonder how the artist decided she wants to draw manga
with that kind of artstyle...)

If you're just starting to read yaoi, this may be your cup of tea. Sadly, it's not mine anymore.

I don't think the art is so bad as some people say, but It certainly could be better. It all looks rushed, wich is weird, since I've got the feeling that the mangaka is dragging this story.

The part about Takano and Ritsu and their previous relationship is well written in my opinion. But this manga could have ended a long time ago. I get the feeling that the author is just using random cliches and stalling. And the side stories... Oh my.nso boring. They really don't deserve so many chapters.

I just hope she finishes the manga soon and don't screw up the ending!
