Just so much no, literally.

I was actually enjoying this somewhat at the beginning. It has an interesting concept, protagonist and subtle dark undertones to what was otherwise a pretty lighthearted story. However, that all changed soon after, becoming literally the worst thing I've ever read.

The fact the main character is a girl is used in a really distasteful way. Although she appeared strong at the beginning, she starts to pretty much just become a crybaby, crying really easily and being quite emotionally fragile, which was exactly the things I read gender-bending manga to avoid. I enjoy seeing strong, independent female characters who can stand as equals along males, but Nono in this manga did not do that at all. Her characterisation gradually weakened throughout the whole manga, going from strong at the beginning as she successfully fended off an attack by a perverted male to weak as she pretty much willingly

let herself get raped by this guy who would reveal her secret otherwise.
Other reviewers have said it "shows her determination" and whatnot but I really don't agree at all, since there were just so much other ways for her to handle it; she'd already been found out by other people even including a police officer who meant no harm, so she could have depended on them a bit more rather than basically

giving up her body
. I was also mortified at how this scene was pretty much drawn in such a fanservice-y style, which I thought was really inappropriate.

The structure also doesn't feel complete. It seems there are parts missing from the story, particularly towards the end. Moreover, she didn't end up revealing her true gender to even her close friends or rival (except this one guy who found out by accident) which I also thought was strange, as I think her close friends at least deserved to know. Also, her visions of her brother were never really explained properly and the 'resolution' felt like it was taking the easy way out. Moreover, the last arc depended so freaking much on luck, especially with the last jumps with the guy who broke his record by a large margin to lead the team to victory. I thought this was also distasteful, since such a large portion of the manga focused on training so hard; you'd expect the victory to be based on their talents rather than some gods determining the wind explanation and basically pure luck.

Many characters also had really twisted ways of thinking, almost insane/mental-like although this is all treated as normal. I suppose this is what I should've expected from the guy who wrote Elfen Lied, but I'm really just disappointed. Although I've heard Elfen Lied was apparently some deep, complex thing, it seems that this work at least doesn't represent his talent well at all. Tones of insanity are just used to create an illusion of darkness and complexity instead of actual good storytelling.

I finished reading this because I thought it really couldn't get any worse, and held onto the hope that it might become as good as it was towards the beginning. However, I was wrong, and it really didn't salvage itself. This is probably the most disappointing thing I've ever read in my entire life.

Oh, but if you actually like any of the things I've pointed out as weaknesses, then give it a go. I tend to be quite open minded about things I read and enjoy a variety of genres; however, I don't think I could ever wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone.

Loose Ends

I have heard much about this manga, and I finally started it; but then I dropped it around chapter 60 (should have stayed dropped). I finally picked up again last night, and ending the series today with a great disappointment. I don't care much for sports, I only came for the romance. For the romance section, is quite small.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
At first she crushes on Amashu (I suck at names, but he's always second or something), but we never see him in the last arc of the manga. By this point, I was cheering for the other male character for knowing her secret and helping her. Overall, after the rape scene there was no romance, for the main characters.

I only continued reading because I thought Emperor was going to die, sounds bad but with him out the way there wouldn't be choosing and I disliked him (even if he shows his good side at times).
Loose ends... The ending was a disappointment. They spent all of these chapters showing the contestants' back stories, yet it doesn't hold when the manga ends within three chapters. I really wanted to read more about what happened after that event, yet it just cuts off. What happened to the contestants? They had a lot riding on that event...yet...no one knows what happens afterwards. Sure they talk between the jumps, but no one knows if this came true or not. Other than that event, there are characters who swore revenge against her, never to be seen again.
Problem with the last chapter...(may contain a spoiler)... I would have really loved it if the dream was the ending, that was the main thing I've been hoping for in this manga, but she wakes up.

A good sports manga...
It started pretty strong but got quite unrealistic later...
however, 4 me it had way more positives than negatives so I liked it a lot! (^_^)

Great sport manga

It's long time that I couldn't find a sport manga that can suck me in like that. It brings me a new vision, not only informs me a sport that I rarely pay attention to ,but the fact that the main char is a girl in disguise in a boy and even possesses such huge talent really got me hook.
Her story is a great tragedy, which made me touched a lot. And I love how the mangaka built up a good background story for every talent contestant in the InterHigh. They all have a reason to win at all cost, thus make the characters deeper.
Too bad, it has rush ending and left some plot twists unsolved. But ok, I still love the series, it brought me a lot of thought and emotion.

I really enjoyed reading Nonono. I love the strong female lead in the manga and how all the character's are so colorful and different. The plot itself is full of suspense and excitement. Most importantly, though, it makes ski jumping look super cool and fun! Nononono could've been a perfect sports manga, if it weren't for a few irritating things. I earnestly want to recommend this manga, but before I do, I have to rant about some of my complaints.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
First of all, I am definitely not a fan of ecchi comics and I just have to say, this manga is the perfect example of a manga that fails because of stupid fan service. It's just not necessary and ruins all the nice scenes! I don't hate smut but there's specific types of manga where it belongs and none of that pervy stuff belongs in a sports manga like Nononono. What was with those huge ass boobs, perverted comments, and stripping naked all the time? And what the HELL is with the rapist teacher! Man, the fan service just ****ed up a perfectly good manga.
Lastly, the ending was just too RUSHED!! I expected the manga to go on and elaborate on how Nonomiya got to the Olympics and how she obtained the medal. All we get is a stupid time skip and what a chapter's worth of epilogue. Plus, what's with all the loose ends? What happened to the rapist teacher getting revenge after getting out of prison? What happened to Negita and his friends after the InterHigh? Bah. I'm disgusted.

Anyways, that was just my rant. Overall, I'm pretty happy I found another good sports manga. smile Please, go on and read Nononono. Don't be put off by the art because you'll get used to it and actually start enjoying after a while (eh, actually, the fan service is annoying until the end).

I generally dislike sport manga but have decided to read it anyway based on many good reviews on MU and just to kill some time over the summer. It fell below my non-expectant expectations, if you get my drift. IMHO, ski jumping is just as exciting as fishing or golf, only so much more dangerous and can induce cardiac arrest in a weak and acrophobic person like yours truly. However, I give the mangaka props for doing his research and his willingness on covering a sport different than the normal ones, like basketball, baseball, tennis, etc.
Itís not the sport itself that unsatisfied me. Itís the inconsistency in pacing, the plot, and the characters that get this series a bad rating. Everything feels off,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
like a certain character that is supposed be the love interest disappears for the last few volumes and only turns up at the last chapter,
or the fact that the main characterís personality varies from being strong in one chapter and then cries at the drop of a hat at the next (this is my biggest pet-peeve of the whole series!). Actually, I should say that the MC cries almost all the time, which gets on my nerve when she is supposed to be a guy. And for someone with a huge ambition
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
(about getting into the Olympic as a guy) she often does stupid things that almost reveal her secret.
Characters keep getting introduced and flashbacks are the norm in this series. Usually those things arenít a big deal, but this series rushes to the ending and ends so quickly that all of those characters and events feel meaningless.
I would not recommend this series unless youíre curious about ski jumping.

this, and the manga one outs is the best sport manga i had ever read. the best point about this manga is the unhinged characters. from nono and her emotionally disturbed family, ultra violent senpai and rapist teacher, cheating school, secret sacrifice sect, etc. really, the characters are so entertaining with their random violent outburst. i especially love the way the artist draw their emotions, so twisted and grotesque.

i am also in love with the way the sport is shown. i got dizzy sometimes seeing the hill from the top. its breathtaking the way they slide down the ramp and just fly. i will never be tempted to try this, its too scary, but it is certainly beautiful to look at. the artist is highly skilled in capturing the immense grandeur of the sport.

i like that there is no 'training' for the main character. she is perfect, and that's it. i don't need to see super quick stupid training montage that can beat better and highly trained people 'just because'. she is highly gifted, always have and always be, so it is not weird for her to win.

really, try this.

...the ending wasn't rushed! *may contain some spoilers* I love most aspects of this story otherwise, including but not limited to, gender bending, unrequited love, prodigy-like skills, ryoma echizen-like cockiness at times, false shoujo-ai and tragic past. This made up for the bad points; in my case, like the attempted rape, the long period it took for the main character to start winning again, and inconclusive ending. Other wise, it was one of my favorite gender benders/sport mangas! I'd like everyone to remember, though, that the situations she ends up in are mostly because of her determination to get into the Olympics. Like the attempted rape...it really shows how bad she wanted to go enough to let him (almost) do that to her. So don't say it was pointless, because I'm pretty sure it was used to show how much she was determined to go to the Olympics.

The whole ski jumping part of the manga is really good, but gets unrealistic as the series goes on. And I find all the side stories, her getting found out in the various ways she does, the violence gets abit out of hand and ruins the actual sporting part of the manga.
