If you don't treat this manga as primarily a romance series, you will love it.

I'll let it out now: main flaw is the huge harem (I think it's like, what, 6 now? I lost track), followed by the other flaws: stereotypical clueless nice main character (are you an idiot, Raku Ichijou? ARE YOU?!), somewhat generic characters that generally embody one or two specific traits, and the fact that almost everyone is SO DENSE.

But what about as a slice of life comedy?

In that regard, Nisekoi shines. Komi Naoshi has mastered his art through his previous manga releases that often got axed, so every page is well structured and plotted, every character is well drawn, and every "reaction" expression is brilliantly executed. If you go into this with the wrong mindset, you will get pissed off with all the generic harem plotting, and that'll cause you to ignore its art and ball-busting humor.

Comparing this hack job to Love Hina is an insult to Love HIna. Believe it or not, it *is* possible to write an entertaining harem manga with interesting characters. Keitaro matures as a person a great deal over the course of Love Hina and there are real developments in his relationships with the girls. Perhaps most importantly, they don't start out in love with him for the flimsiest of pretexts. They're actually stuck together because of circumstances and gradually grow to like one another.

Nisekoi is the story of a bunch of girls who all instantly fall in love with the boringest guy in the universe reason. Heck if I can figure out why. This is harem manga at its worst. The main character has no personality and no real reason to exist other than as the plot device that brings the girls together. The girls all fit into tired old stereotypes. And worst of all: nothing ever changes. Nothing happens in this manga. Calling it 'slow paced' would imply that the pace was nonzero, but that's not true. Every time it looks like they might take a step forward they also take a step back.

Comedy is another important element in a manga like this and Nisekoi does slightly better in that area. Though that's not saying much. Many of the jokes fall flat and old ideas get recycled. If you're just looking for humor there are so many better mangas out there.

And BTW, does anyone remember the whole waring-families-want-their-kids-to-pretend-to-date-for-peace thing that was where the 'Nise' in the title was supposed to come from? That's actually a kind of interesting (though hardly original) premise. Unfortunately, it's completely forgotten as the manga goes along. It's like the author just ran out of ideas for what to do with that setting and shoved it aside.

Somewhere in there, somewhere in this manga is an interesting plot. But saying that it progresses at a snail's pace is a massive understatement. Outside of the seemingly plotless narrative, you have a cast of shallow unlikeable characters (the main heroine especially), a cookie-cutter protagonist, repetitive attempts at humour, and one of the worst excuses for a harem I have ever seen. You know there is something wrong with a manga when an arc that has barely anything to do with the overarching plot is far more interesting than any of the meager plot progression that there has been so far.

I hate this manga.

It's like the author tough: "Lets make an harem and forget about the plot", you got nothing here except the harem, the MC is boring, he has nothing, no talent, no interest, not a thing, at least in the one-shot he had some character.

This is pretty much "Love Hina 2: This time they don't even have a goal", and the "plot" is quite similar to make it better.

Every couple of years another harem gets popular

Another generic harem manga becomes popular due to the next generation of horny pre-teen boys. It's like the publishers have a checklist of harem manga cliches and they commission some new poor schmuck author to follow that list to a T. Nisekoi is that manga, as there's not a single original bone in its body. The art and its execution isn't bad, but it feels like yet another market researched, massed produced clone that was churned out from the soulless Shounen Jump factory.

Tempest, the first sentence of your comment is where Nisekoi falls flat. You mention progress, which is the one thing that is sorely lacking. The comparison to Love Hina begins and ends with the childhood promise part. The rest of Love Hina had an overarching plot and each one of the girls progressed in some manner, especially the two main characters. Nisekoi has already cast the molds of its characters and has changed little to nothing except that if they didn't love the MC before, they do now.

Contrary to your belief, I'm sure many people here are used to the harem genre, which is probably why there are such passionate views on this manga. Here is a manga that had great potential and was indeed well written, however it feels like this potential has been squandered. The problem is that the author cannot move the story forward at a pace he would like because its popularity in Jump seems to be dictating the length of the story. Think of a story you wish to write that would fit concisely in 500 pages. Now force yourself to write the same story after you're told to make it 3000 pages long (or longer). You couldn't do it properly, and the work would suffer. That's what is going on here.

It's your average harem. A not so special guy is loved by tons of girls. No real tension or excitement unless you count " oh! another girl showed up and she likes the main character too."

Glancing over the written reviews, its painfully clear that most people are not used to harem stories and how they progress. The childhood friends and promises remind me of Love Hina. This is a good harem story that has way more comedy value than others that I have read. A rating of 8.0 or higher would be fair for Nisekoi. I'm not sure why people expect everything resolved immediately like Raku picking a girl or the pendant mystery being solved because that is ridiculous and would just end the series. Of course they are going to support and publish the manga as long as they can. The progression of things between characters is fine due to the fact that they are only partially into year two at the time of this writing (Chapter 112 is most recent). It is well-written and comedic. Also, if you know even a little bit about harems, you probably know that it is not odd to add characters (especially when they are already mentioned in other chapters). I like that the author did a slow build of a harem instead of the traditional most/all girls of the harem are here right from the start. Interesting take on the harem/childhood promise kind of dynamic. For me, it is 9/10. Way better than many manga of its type.

The only thing different is swapping outerspace and aliens with gangsters and police officers. I thought it was good when it started but it became cliche so fast, so many girls introduced. So many love interests even for a Harem, it keeps increasing. It looks like it's being force fed to stay alive. It'll probably end abruptly too.

I got half way through chapter 15, and had enough. At first, I thought "Well, this manga might be interesting. We've got the childhood friend, and the girl that is the invader in this relationship. Maybe this series will even break the mold and let the childhood friends actually get together, rather than be usurped by the main female lead (because reasons, that's why!)" But when the main female lead started talking about a 10 year promise as well, I started to question how much I was going to take from this series, having already been annoyed at all these clear revelations being sidelined by the characters' crippling case of the stupids. I eventually gave up and went to the wiki, to learn that the main female lead also has a key. Oh joy, what are the odds of that? Then I went to the last chapter currently out (107) and skimmed all the pages... to learn that the same ol stick is still being played out.

Things were moving so fast in the beginning, I thought this series might be interesting. Get all the romantic mystery plots out of the way, and now they have to date the ones they want while hiding it from everyone else or something... but no... this series just sucks.
