The manga is just some cliche school life romance manga. The main girl is just a frustrating, shy, no confident cry baby. Overall, this story is expected.

However, I don't know why I still find it captivating. Probably it's because this manga has it's own uniqueness, with the characters having a height difference of 50cm. And, maybe it's because there isn't too much of a dramatic scene that makes me want to stop reading. Though the female lead is some typical crybaby, but I don't find her weak. Though she is not strong either, somehow, it just seems to me that she will try to work things through.

She may not be the ideal female lead and the guy might not be the ideal male lead. But maybe that's why it's still capturing my attention. After all, no one is perfect.

As another person had said earlier, most of us reading this series are probably a bit too old for the intended age group. Shoujo in Japanese literally means, young female. Ribon Magazine (the shoujo magazine that this series is serialized in) is targeted at 9-13 year olds in Japan, so keep that in mind before you read this. That said, this series is in no way, shape or form a series about pedophilia or lolicon (as another reviewer here thought it was too much like one). The main character is simply just short. She can't help her height.

Anyway, onto the review! This series is your typical shoujo manga about a shy girl who's not too confident. She struggles to make new friends and struggles to tell the guy she likes how she feels. As Hiyori's confidence grows, so does her height! Her goal is to tell Yuushin (the super tall guy she likes) how she feels and catch up with him in height.

My thoughts: HiyoKoi is very cute series! The main character reminds me so much of myself (although I didn't hide or run away when I got embarrassed) when I was in high school. Reading this series actually made me want to fall in love again lol! I definitely recommend it to anybody who loves shoujo with cute artwork!

The heroine is a complete and utter crybaby, weak and hopeless, always losing confidence and getting frustrated.
And yet.
I love this manga. @_@

This is, I think, a unique manga in this sense: yeah, the heroine's pathetic. Yeah, she's a crybaby. Yeah, she overreacts. Yeah, she's sensitive. That's just who she is, and we're not fed any garbage about her being strong or anything- unlike other shoujo mangas where the supposedly 'strong' and 'independent' female leads are bawling into someone's shirt every other chapter.

The manganka is honest with us about Hiyori. Hiyori IS a crybaby, she's not strong or independent AT ALL. And seeing that acknowledged is so refreshing.

I don't like her being a crybaby, don't get me wrong- I just really like that it's ACKNOWLEDGED. She is who she is, and we see her taking these tiny little baby steps to get stronger, braver. And I'm liking where her character is going, at a realistically slow pace. And of course, her romance with Hirose. ^_^

As a side note, I like the avoided cliche with Kou-kun and Natsuki not turning out to be love interests/rivals. I also like Hirose's friendship with his childhood friend, and Reina's sharp but bitchy intelligence. And Tanaka, the president XD I love him. Also like the extras with the classroom teacher. biggrin

And the development, I won't lie, is slow. But some people like it that way. *cough*Me.*cough*

So yeah. It is a slow story. But I like it. I love it. I wanna finish this series and see Hiyori the crybaby mature into who-knows-what-but-I-know-it'll-be-good. I wanna see her and Hirose get together. Everyone's reactions. How they get there. I wanna read the rest of the story. smile

Give it a chance. You might find yourself surprised.

If you're looking for a quintessential Shoujo manga this is it. Awkward girl shows up, has a best friend, meets here love interest, gets a love relive, gets a secondary guy who's interested in her, ect., ect. All the while she's full of angst and self-doubt.

Rating: 4/5 (as of ch18)
If you're looking for a solid Shoujo manga this is it. The characters didn't really grab me, and it's a little too "Slice of Life" for my taste. However, most Shoujo fans should find it an enjoyable read.

It is TRULY a one of a kind read, I think. c:

It's adorable, and I personally love the situation of shy people throwing away their shyness (maybe cause i'm shy xD, I don't know)
It's just such a good read!

Just read it now! You'll be glad you did!! C:

It's cute and simple I won't say it's crap because of it's any other shoujo story line. The art is really nice and you have an easy going plot to read. I really enjoyed it, I espically like Yuushin & Kou-chan.

I really love this manga! The main character is so cute and really honest, being able to show weakness when she's takes steps she was unable to do in the past.I usually hate crybaby heroines, but Hiyori is different, she's lovable and reasonable. Especially since even though she is painfully shy, she's trying her hardest to change and become someone more outgoing. The way she both loves and admires Yuushin is adorable too! Hiyori is someone shy people(like me) can relate to. the author did a great job with this manga and i really wish it was published in English so could own the all the books. I recommend this 100% ^_^

Never have I ever found a main female character in a shoujo manga that is a crybaby and is weak yet is adorable and completely likable. Hiyorin is certainly the case.

The plot of this manga isn't mind-blowing, in fact, it is definitely cliche. But it's the characters that keep me going. (And the author doesn't use cliches in a vomit-inducing sort of way, thankfully - mostly this is because the character is so likable!)

I like how even though Hiyorin is a crybaby and weak, it's not used pathetically as a trait just to de-Mary Sue her. It's used as a flaw in this story - she wants to overcome this; she doesn't try to run away from her problems, like a previous reviewer mentioned.

I love how the artist has the ability to create heart-warming (yes, I know, cliche xD) scenes...the art is lovely, not the best, but very cute and shoujo-like...and the reader is able to feel what Hiyorin is feeling, in terms of romance. I like that. And it's not vomit-inducing at all.

Also, I like how Hiyorin accepts the fact that she likes Hirose, it's not that whole "girl-is-too-dense-to-realize-that-she's-in-love" thing. And I like that Hiyorin likes Hirose for his personality, not his looks.

Hirose is really adorable. He's decent looking, but that's not the main point. It's is personality that brings him out - he's outgoing and friendly, especially to Hiyorin, which is probably why she's attracted to him in the first place. I love how in here, friendship comes before romance (although she was rather quick to admit she likes him).

Anyway, I recommend this to readers who enjoy fluffy, adorable romance and a lovable female character. Not for shoujo fans into smut and tsusendre girls (unless you like all types, like me biggrin).

This series is for YOUNG GIRLS (early middle school ect..) so to be honest most of us reading and rating this series are probably older that the intended demographic. (WHICH IS WHY TO SOME IT MIGHT SEEM DISAPPOINTING!)But it is not at all its a rather pleasant & cute read (IT'S NOT LOLICON BTW !) the story & flow so far is rather good and the art is improving as the story also goes on. though some of it is cliche but it's shojo lol. btw i had my friends younger sister read this (she's 12) she rated it a 9/10 and I (22yrs) thinking what would I have really rated it if i was in the age bracket of 12-16 would have given it a 6 1/2 so I went with a 7/10!
also Though the female lead can be a bit shy & crybaby I like how she's working on improving herself to be better on being more outgoing and not running away from her problems every time.

Is this actually for girls ?

I don't suppose any hot-blooded feminist who likes to imagine themselves as the main heroine would leave this alone if they decide to read it, since to them the girl would probably appear to be pathetic and frustrating to deal with (like why don't you just get up and do something ?). Small clumsy girl, that sort of thing probably appeals more to male readers, but hey, I'm no demographic expert.

There is nothing quite marvel or original about this series. The guy is good-natured and amiable to a fault. The girl is the poster child for 'moe mascot'. Seems like a world chock-full of good people, even the would-be love rival is beyond reproach. Someone was complaining that the background characters (especially the guys) were shallow. That complaint is so meta and applicable to so many anime series it's not even funny. Why do all the chicks fall for this one pathetic run-off-the-mill guy while other guys are all jealous ? Why is scoring with a girl all that high school boys seem to think of, do they lack other healthy pursuits ? Why are those who indeed have other pursuits (usually studying) portrayed as either that other boring guy in the class with no life that no one particularly cares about, or a godlike genius who seems to think intelligence equals being able to remember the name of Uzbekistan's capital city and computers equal screens of DNA strands and magical override key spamming ? And guess what, this does not just apply to fiction in Japan (hint hint).

I think someone else was complaining about scantily clad little girls and lolicon hentai here. Really, I kept my eyes peeled here and I don't recall one single instance a girl shows anything remotely resembling a cleavage. I hate the kind of woman you'd find somewhere in 'Sex and the City' about as much as you can imagine, and I don't see anyone showing off their skin here. I can't imagine what your reactions would be like if you watched hollywood movies these days. And the questionable incident you might be speaking of was
Spoiler (highlight to view)
because the tip of her skirt got stuck and she didn't realize it, everyone was dumbfounded while one guy started laughing at her and she ran away. Yes that certainly necessitates the comparison to lolicon hentai and saying Japan is full of pedophiles. Really. Really.

How does the wind feel like up there on your moral high ground ? Down here I still see the McMartin trial being the longest and most expensive trial in American history, we might as well make another Monty Python movie about such trials and the child abuse hysteria instead of witch hunts. And that's before we mention all the lovely politicians all over the world who want to pass all kinds of Big Brother, 1984-style legislation because we apparently should 'think of the children'. Since McMartin, my bullshit detector works at maximum power whenever someone starts to 'think of the children'.
