Description
From Tinte:
Suh Hyun-bin grew up under the cruel hand of street gangsters, but after her little brother dies, Hyun-bin runs away and is taken in by a rich family to be trained to become a bodyguard. However, she must hide that she is female, and pose as a man. And so, for eight years, she grows up as a cold, male, bodyguard. It looks like she'll be this way forever--until a fateful encounter with Lee Yun-ha shakes her very foundations, and leaves her conflicting with herself, as her feelings of love clash against her feelings of duty.

The best manhwa.. So close to my heart

I loved this manhwa. This is just the best. Its perfectly portrays love, pain, emotions, difficulty and happiness. It teaches the value of even the tiniest happiness. I read this in April and now I am downloading and re-reading it again. I am very sad that some people give very bad reviews about this manhwa because it doesn't deserve it. It is an epic love story. I understood the meaning of true love from this. I respect it a lot. I have a corner of my heart reserved for this manhwa. Love it. Anyways, I wanted love in the mask 2 where spring and bi rak oppa's son fall in love.

To this day I still have problems understanding Korean Manhwa. For one, who sports a couple-ring with his buddy as an evidence of male-bonding? What's with the 70s/80s sparkling-eyed-look; even on the male characters? Why is there always at least one psycho female and masochistic male who feeds on tragedy in the fomula? How about the draggy storytelling? Where's the moe and tantalising elements that are usually present in Japanese manga of similar genre? For someone who has a thing for gender-bender or BL works, I was very disappointed. Six volumes later... I've decided that I still love Korean food but I'll stick to reading Japanese manga instead.

it's incredibly slow and the leads, both male and female are annoying. The character development in minimal. I saw very little improvement and depth in the characters. the female lead remained ignorant and incredibly mentally weak. The male lead just remained a jerk.

Plot development was jerky. Things never really flowed and it was very cliche

Art was average. Like i said above, things just didn't flow and neither did the artwork

if you came here looking for a good gender bender, love in the mask is not it.

her true gender isn't revealed to her 'true love' until literally, the end of the book.

characters were really annoying. the antagonists just got away with anything pretty much and were unrealistic

ok i have to say that i loved this series for the first 100 chapters, even around chaper 40 or so i was looking forward to reading it more than anything in my day but one it got to about chapter 100 it just went downhill for me and i actually had to force myself to read it becuse i was so sick of it and bored, and to be honest, those last 30 chapters readlly made me depressed. another thing is that the ending was a HUGE let down, they could have made i nice ending, but near the end it just seemed like the author rushed to make some sorta surprise ending when it just turned out to be like a bunch of random stuff just thrown in out of nowhere that didnt add to the story at all.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
another thing i didnt understand was why hyun bin couldnt just REALLY run away to japan with yun ha, i mean why did she have to join the gang if even the president guy the grandfather was tricking thought hyun bin was in japan, i mean what was the point in that really? just tho make her suffer more? it just didnt make sense to me why she had to be in the gang all that time

so yeah read the first 100 chapter or so and drop it, youll regret it if you read it to the end

Mixed Feelings...
Rating: 6.0 / 10.0

I found Love in the Mask while I was searching for good gender benders to read, and I absolutely loved the premise. The story kept me hooked until about chapter 80. At that point I started to dislike where the story was going so I dropped it (plus the male lead's undying devotion was getting on my nerves). When I saw that it had been completely scanlated, I decided to give the ending a shot. I read it from the beginning (skimming through a few parts), and forced myself to keep reading until the end.

I really didn't like the last 30 chapters or so. They were fine to read, but I felt as if the story I'd fallen in love with had disappeared. I would have been much more satisfied if the story had ended around the time when the main characters finished high school. It felt like I was reading the ending from a distance because, for some weird reason, I didn't have any emotional connection to the characters. I didn't absolutely hate the ending, but it wasn't done the way I was hoping for (which can be a good thing in some cases, the ending being a suprise and all, but I felt really let down by the whole setup).
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Another thing that really bothers me is that the revelation of Hyun Bin's gender seemed very... anticlimactic. I love gender benders and always hope that the main character's true gender won't be revealed too early on, so I was glad that Hyun Bin's disguise lasted for a while. But then it kept dragging and dragging and, when it all came down to it, with the hypnosis and the forgetting and everything, the "big reveal" just wasn't satisfying at all. And am I the only one who didn't like the long-haired guy (I think his name was something Bi-Rak... it's been a while)? He was really annoying and I think the story would have been a lot better (and shorter) if he was completely taken out of it. I hated how his presence distracted from the main couple at the end.

The art (especially facial expressions) was never spectacular, but it really started to bother me about 2/3 of the way through. I think I wouldn't have minded the story's shortcomings quite as much if the art was better.

All of that said, I would be lying if I claimed that I hate this manhwa. I really liked the beginning, was disenchanted by the middle, and was pretty disappointed by the ending, but I'm still glad I read it. It's not the end of the world if you end up not liking it, so don't be afraid to give it a shot if it seems interesting to you.

Good start, too long, awful end.

I really liked the beginning, loved hyunbin and how strong she was. But the longer I read, the worse it got. The situation between birak and hyunbin was okay, but it was nothing compared to how addicted I was at the start.

And I'm so frustrated because of this story. So many things could've happened...and didn't. I mean we had a good love triangle, but there was absolutely no confrontation between the rivals. Yunha was completely forgotten at the end. I got so tired of the drama of the separation between hyunbin and yunha. It was dragged on for waaaaaaay too long. Give me some action and passion instead of the endless weeping and 'if only I could see you now, but no I can't' etc....
It was so blah at the end. And birak's death just messed it all up even further.

No no no. The idea was fantastically original, the beginning was so good, but the latter half was awful to read. I only read it because I hoped it would get better again, but it was a huge disappointment.

I'm not sure if I would recommend it. It's not like I can say, just read the first part and leave the rest.

Dragged

I really love this story. And I thought the ending was okay too (all right, I got depressed over BiRak's death). I especially loved how the last part showed HyunBin and BiRak's kids together. It's as if they would be there to continue the love story between their parents that was never realized. On the other hand, the story was a bit too long. I mean, why drag the story and add characters that won't really add much to the plot? (I'm talking about the american guy here) Also, I hate how Lee Hyunha somehow lost his character at the later part of the story. He was really cool at first but he just seemed like a wimp toward the end making me sympathize more on BiRak and wish that he could be HyunBin's partner instead.
