Akuma to Love Song revolves around an unusual girl, Kawai Maria who was expelled from her previous school, St. Katria Girls' School, and soon transfers to Touzuka High School, a public school with low standards. Her sharp tongue and straightforward personality leads everyone to hate her with the exception of two handsome boys who eventually get involved with her. With a devil's aura like hers and an arrogant facade to pair it up with, it's just too hard to be understood. And so Maria needs to deal with bullying, adjusting, fitting in and romance. Just how will a devil like her cope with all these predicaments?

I read this before when there were just 2 chapters, I got impatient for the next release so I dropped it and never really got to read it when the third chapter was released. I was thinking of picking it up again but there were some comments about it being unrealistic and how everyone was so "devil-ized". I hesitated but did read it again and wow, I am surprised. I loved it and think it really is good. I love how the characters are dissected (in a good way), how Maria analyzes everyone, it just seems so true. The setting of the story, japanese high school, might not actually fit the characters in a way that high school kids can't be that bad or mature or whatever but it reflects real life in its own amazing way and I can really relate to that. There's character development, laughter and romance in it that I really really like.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
I seriously adore Megu. There is just something about Yuusuke that just seem like he won't be able to keep up with our wild Maria. We're still on the early chapters but I think that Yuusuke is kinda weak. Might be too early to say that, let's just see later.

When I read first chapters somehow I thought Maria was kinda like Yuuko(XXholic), but with an open character. You have to be atleast a little supernatural to read people like that. I like Maria, hope author wouln't destroy her character in the end.

To start off with this series is really good. The characters all have this air of suspense that makes them interesting and unique, especially Maria.
However as the manga progresses things become more and more dramatic and as things are revealed I feel as if it starts to go a little cliche.
The story behind Maria's birth is great and I loved the way that it linked up to her hatred of physical contact but I feel as though that hatred of physical contact shouldn't have disappeared as fast.
I also feel as though the way in which Maria simply forgave the man who raped her mother -regardless of love or other feelings- was too unrealistic.
I enjoy the mangas that i read to be a little more realistic then what i've been reading now. When reading through the parts involving things like the suicide and self hatred i find that to be even more unrealistic. It would have had more impact had the artist made it more realistic because after an experience like that, people shouting at you wouldn't help and the way it was handled was honestly not up to par.
Also, in the beginning i felt that Meguro was the type of guy who was laid back but as the story progressed he became more cliche and he lost the restraint that he should have had towards Maria and the way Maria began to act towards him was way too fast for my liking.
Overall this starts off as a great read but as you continue things become less interesting and unrealistic making it slightly irritating to read. It also loses a lot of the suspense that the characters were great for and the personalities of them, for kanda yuusuke and Erosu this is especially true. Finally I feel as though Maria's unique personality diminishes a little too much during the character development and she starts to look like a normal everyday girl.
This was a great manga and although it has its down i believe it's still worth the read for those who are looking for some romance and drama.

The first few volumes are quite enjoyable and while the middle volumes do stray from what seemed to be the series' premise (and ratchet up the melodrama) they werent terrible, just something of a departure. But then
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
they decide to introduce the rapist of a 14 year old girl as a sympathetic character, who receives no punishment for his crime, who is forgiven by everyone and who goes on about how he loved his victim. The forgiveness angle would have been bad enough if he had to work for it, but the entire package and the way its presented just makes it feel not only vile but entirely, laughably actually, false and artifical. It shatters any suspension of disbelief and really ruined the series I think.

Misunderstanding Archetype

As a lot of commentators have said, this manga is pretty good up until the Anna Arc.

I fully got to enjoy Maria and her gang of misfits (which turns out to be pretty much everyone~). The only character that was furiously unrealistic was the teacher (who would have long been fired). But even with that, the sappiness was somewhat, really heartfelt. I don't usually (stand) like shoujo manga, but this Maria up until the arc, got me to...really like her.

What happens afterwards, well as many say, it deteriorates into mediocre. Its not bad per-se, in fact to an avid shoujo fan, maybe it is up-par. I donnu? But to me, it fell into the many plot devices, cliches and terribly executed misunderstandings (I still don't get why some supposed childhood trauma means you should avoid the persons feelings and your own).

The characters further on do a few changes, and although some might be happy, I found they became more superficial rather then the original deep. Even further along, it grows to a point where you might expect Maria to suddenly cry from getting a pat from Meguro. The whole "we can't communicate" becomes a strain on the readers mind. I still braved through till chapter 74. I'm not sure if I'll brave through further, but by now (at last) the two have finally gotten their feelings across, and finally got to the point of accepting her childhood trauma with her mother and the priest.

So my thoughts on this? I'd recommend most people to read up until her Anna friend comes along, and if you are still keen, maybe until Meguro rejects Maria on christmas. But reading further, that is only for someone who is much more of an avid romantic woes-be-me attitude lover.

I'm not going to complement on the plot. And some, if you wish (or believe otherwise) can disregard this review, as to be honest, after the whole big misunderstanding with Maria's trauma, I skipped about 2/3 of the chapters. Ha ha ....

I like characters like her, but I loathe love triangles, especially if it involves 2 girls and 1 guy- it turns this into more of a 'typical' shoujo. Beforehand, it was a fine read- in fact I would prefer it this only had SUBTLE romance lol (maybe, wait, definitely because I personally didn't like the love triangle). As everyone else had say, the art is cool and Maria is especially pretty and a bit dull...

Edit: I read it again, and I seriously loved the beginning, but yet again, it disappointed me again with her I love Megu phase. It got interesting with another new character though, therefore I will keep reading, hoping for the impossible... (I hate cliche stuff, gawd, I should take a break from manga)

When I first starting reading it, I thought it was a nice opening and I thought it had a lot of potential. Up until the latest volume (vol 8)..With the whole Anna arc.. after that, i found some raws to check out and the story plot just plummeted I did not like the ending at all! Not much character development either -_-.
I don't think I'll pick it back up again even when it's completely translated.

Maria is so brutally honest that she's everyone's reality check, which is why people can't hide who they really are, and also why everyone hates her. On the other hand, she's completely able to handle the situation and solve her problems. She's a tough character and someone everyone is attracted to. There are lots of side characters that you'll love to hate and some that you'll hate to love. But this isn't a manga with any romantic moments, rather it's something more about gaining redemption and obtaining cardio fortitude.

It was pretty good! Entertaining, to say the least. What kept me reading were the main character and the art.

Characters: 7/10

For one thing, I LOVE the main character and her personality/development. She's quite different from others you see in typical shoujo manga - she is smooth, not afraid to let out her emotions (no matter what kind - and this means that she's not afraid to cry, either). The best part about her is that she's SMART. In most shoujo manga, whenever there is a rivalry and the other girl pulls a trick, the main lead is ALWAYS oblivious to this. Not in this case. And there are MANY other examples in this manga where the heroine is depicted clever as well.

The only drawback to the characters are the side characters - bo-ring. Seriously. And trust me, I usually go for the side characters rather than the main ones. But here, it's the main characters that are interesting. Also, I really don't like how EVERY single female rival is almost always bi-polar. Once, she is sweet and innocent. Then, she's angsty and cruel. wtf? A character doesn't always have to have split personalities to be developed...sheesh!

Plot: 6/10

'cause really, it's your typical shoujo plot. Love triangles, fitting in school with others, dark past, unrequited love, bullying...blah, blah, blah. Nothing really THAT original.

Art: 9/10

AMAAAAAAZING. True, the side characters aren't much unique, but that improves in the later chapters. The shading is well done, the eyes, the facial structure, the's all beautiful.
