In my belief, this was a beautiful shoujo manga.
Miaka Yuuki wasn't a very admirable herione, such as the prequeled Prietess Takiko Okuda, and many things were in fact predictable. But Miaka, though naive and dependant on others, had the capability to love unconditionally, which surprised me. I would have preffered her with Tasuki over that swine of a boy Tamahome, but all in all, it was a good story. It was not so much the romance that had captivated me, but the legend of The Universe of the Four Gods had. I even started studying the actual legend myself.
Read it for two reasons: you're either a sappy romantic, or compelled by beautiful Chinese legends.
i dont care
everyone have their opinion 4 this manga..i dont care..i love it still!!go3 fushigi yuugi~
Complete Damsel is in Distress
It has a setting, it has a story too. But most of it is there so you can have this wishy washy romance. One could give Miaka credit for being brave, or they could give her credit for taking reckless actions that brews up more trouble for the characters.
It's humorous, it's cute, but whatever kind of epic story it was trying to tell was completely ruined the by the pointless separations and angst.
I realize this is a classic, but honestly.

I had fun reading this manga and would and will read it again. I'm a fan of sappy romance and this has it.
Cute, funny manga!
Excluding Miaka and Yui being idiots, I love it! There were times when it was really sweet and times when it was really sad that I started to cry and scream to the computer screen... (no comment). And Fushigi Yuugi is very funny! Especially Nuriko and Tasuki! <333
Actually this manga is a 10/10 for me, but I marked it down 1 because the author made the best/funniest character in that manga die... *sob* R.I.P. Nuriko...
But overall it's really good, there are times when I thought Miaka and Yui were overreacting and it was irritating but I liked the plot and the characters and this was a really great manga for me.
Soap opera warning
Another airhead schoolgirl who gets in over her head... And then 7+ hot guys come to her aid. Predictable love triangles/squares/whatnot, and characters don't seem to develop -- Miaka is always a really dumb and lovestruck airhead throughout the whole series. Not too bad, but why are both she and Tamahome so obnoxious?
for some reason i give it a 8 cause i think FYgenbuK is far better but still i love this story my favorite character is tasuki he is so HOT in a way ^^ . love the story !!!!you should read this one and the new one fushigi yugi genbu kaiden ^^.
a very good manga and anime
first of all miaka yuuki the heroine IS NOT A WEAK FEMALE LEAD. she even fought a couple of gangsters bravely to save herself. touched hotohori's(emperror) chest, provoked the guards at the palace to fight w her, went to a forest alone to not cause any harm to her guardians etc....
yes she is an airhead but when the story progresses ohh you just cant get enough of her. she got STRONG! very strong
. All of them got their characters developed especially miaka.

i read this manga a few years ago and i loved it. but then again, i love cheesy over-dramatic stories...
but upon reflection, fushigi yuugi wasn't as amazing as i first thought it to be. the art is gorgeous, you can't dispute that. but yeah, i can see how miaka can get on people's nerves. both leads are typical, nothing too special. but i think my favourite character was hotohori; really loved him (he was too good for miaka).
to summarize: read it if you like the cheesy, over-dramatic sort of cliched love story. also a word of caution: halfway through the series, the whole thing turns into something of a soap opera. but on the bright side, the art is really really stunning and there are a handful of memorable characters. (:
seems to me the main male character always get seduced by the bad guys....not all the way, but pretty much seduced....
