I can't really quite define what I mean by "gritty". This by no means means "bad" at all, it just means a heavy emphasis on odd brush strokes and a slightly "sketchlike" look. Perhaps best would be examples:

Yay, I finally remembered a manga series with "gritty" art. Unfortunately, it's a bit late and I came up with only one thing: CAT scanlated by aku-tenshi.

Anything by Katsuhiro Otomo, Taiyo Matsumoto, Shohei Manabe and a load of other underground/alternative manga artists.
