New law targeting otaku culture!!!

SpicyWolfHoro writes: *For those of you who are not keeping up with current events in japan, here is a newsflash!!

Read here to get a better Idea of what is going on:
http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/12/15/tokyo-manga-ban-signed-into-law/

In summary, the tokyo government has just passed a law that directly targets Anime, Manga, and Games! They are censoring things to such an extreme degree that it is likely to put many anime and manga publishing/producing companies out of business.

Any anime, manga, or game that depicts: Violence, Sex, Crime, Homosexuality (Yup, girls there goes your Yaoi), anything that could be construed as "a bad influence on youth", anything of the above depicting minors, and more... (and there goes any Ecchi manga, any student/teacher, incest, age gap, and most shoujo series)

All of which is now a crime to Own, Create, or Sell.

Many mangas will probably be put to an end as they will no longer be legal.

Such examples as To Love-ru!, Wolf Guy, Deadman Wonderland, etc.

With this law, for a series to be legal, the antagonist would either have to be related to the Care Bears, or completely nonexistent. Without an antagonist, there is no plot. Without some kind of crime/evil there is not real antagonist. How do you create a series without a plot? Even 4-koma has a plot... sort of.

The mastermind behind this is Tokyo Governor Shintarō Ishihara, who blatantly shows no care for the illustrated entertainment industry. He claims that the law is to protect the youth of japan, yet he himself is the author of a series of schoolgirl gang rape novels.

The law is coming into effect April 2011, and will come out in full force in July 2011.

Kadokawa (Anime Producing Company) has declared that they will fight the new law.

Feel free to offer them your support: (Page in Japanese)

http://www.kadokawa-pictures.co.jp/companyinfo/contactus.shtml

I don't know what we can do, but support our publishers!!

Spread the news, and join in the fight! I am sending letters to every anime, manga and gaming company that will be affected and declaring my support. I urge all other fans to do the same. Defend our anime! Defend our manga! Defend our starving
artists!*

New Poll - Hugging Parents

So I was thinking about Thanksgiving, which is upcoming in the USA, so why not have a poll about thanking and showing appreciation toward your parents? Maybe this poll will get you thinking about your parents and what they've done for you. (I hope they raised you well). Even if you're a grown man, your parents will still remember when you were a child, so there's no shame in hugging them.

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Christmas Shopping
Choices:
Finished. I get that stuff done early - votes: 200 (1.7%)
I've started already - votes: 960 (8%)
Isn't it too early? Halfway through November... - votes: 4819 (40.2%)
I leave everything to the last minute - votes: 2170 (18.1%)
I don't buy Christmas presents - votes: 3846 (32.1%)
There were 11995 total votes.
The poll ended: November 20th 2010

Well, it was slightly early to have this poll, but Black Friday and Cyber Monday are right around the corner! Cheap prices for great gifts! Still though, I'm saddened by the number of people who don't give any gifts at all (well, perhaps you don't celebrate Christmas, but you could still give gifts to show some appreciation~)

Negima's Akamatsu Plans Free Site for Out-of-Print Manga

From ANN:

Manga creator AKAMATSU Ken (Mahou Sensei Negima!, Love Hina) announced on Monday that he is launching a "J-Comi" website that will eventually post out-of-print manga for free with advertising support. He is working with DEGUCHI Ryusei (Abenobashi Magical Shopping Arcade) and other fellow manga creators, in part to deal with the current situation of manga being scanned and uploaded without authorization.

Under the proposed plan, the site will distribute out-of-print manga with the creators' permission and with advertising. The advertising revenues will then be split among the creators. The site will use PDF (Portable Document Format) files without DRM (digital rights management).

A beta version of the site will launch on November 26 with 14 volumes of Akamatsu's hit manga Love Hina, and the site will tally the number of downloads and clicks as a test of the business model. The site will formally launch on January 10, 2011. Akamatsu will post more information on the official J-Comi blog and on his own Twitter account.
