Everyday is hilarious!

Got a recommendation from my friend. Took some time to actually read it. And I finished it twice (or thrice).

For me, it's a super fun manga, not much of a serious plot although the mangaka does not make light of some matters presented/discussed. Still, the way it approaches these personal dilemmas and developments with humour is breezy, creative and strangely it sticks.

It's a fun ride from beginning to end. A weird fun ride, but not that weird 🙂

I remember putting this series on hold a while back, but really looking past the art, the serie is a fun read and has quirky characters. If you're looking for a serie with a strong female lead, Yankumi is really awesome! Some drawbacks, the extra chapters with Shin and Fuji, the dog, weren't really interesting to me and I wish that there were more romance, but I guess that it fits in the context of their characters.

The Thing is...

This is my favourite manga. I'm saying this first, because it doesn't have a lot of features that bring people to read manga. The art is very different and reminiscent of older shounen manga, even though it is obviously written for a female audience. The guys are mainly ugly bruisers.

The main couple doesn't even kiss.

There are a lot of omakes that don't make any sense at all (There's suddenly a dog wearing clothes. He's in many of the extras, and I have no idea why.)

This manga is about outcasts and societies rejects.
It's about the problems you face when you look different, behave differently, have an accent, or a dialect. It's about how people that have let you down, should not have.
It's about hope in the face of prejudice.
Every single character in this manga has a different face, different mannerism, and you can tell. The art may be simplified, but it makes the ugly bruiser that much more distinct from each other, and also other manga. The main love interests are pretty to look at, but they get plenty of backlash from that anyway.

This is a manga that makes friendship and love between characters obvious, without resorting to telling

(or showing, to reiterate: The main couple does not even kiss. But despite that, there's absolutely no doubt that they end up together.)

Of course, there's plenty of high-school shenanigans and (dirty, sometimes funny, but most often really hilarious) jokes, but there's also the trouble of going to university, finding a job, being accused of yakuza, actually becoming a criminal -- there is so much depth in every page (and then they draw a beard with marker on their sensei. Or photoshop a hot bod on their headshot picture)

I have so much love for this goddamn manga. I loved it when I was 14, and I love it now that I'm 24. And it was definitely written just for me.

Just so you know: Of course I watched all of the adaptions. And there are some touching moments, and all the live-action stars are pretty cute. But the manga made me cry and a page later laugh out loud in hilarity.

Just Look Past the Art

Gokusen is long but worth the read. There's filler and some boring parts but the best parts are worth it. The ending was perfect and had me laughing out loud even the second time I read it. The bonus chapters at the end are just as adorable.
Not one of the best romances, but cute nonetheless and the comedy is more important anyway. Hell, even the action is good to me. Yankumi is an amazing teacher and her students are amazing, especially Shin of course.
The art gets better as the story progresses though never gets to be perfect. I like it, but I'm pretty forgiving on that front. I think if you can look past the art style then it's definitely worth the read.

Rather dry

This series just does not take the "yakuza heiress" premise far enough to make it feel as relevant as it should. It is reminiscent of GTO, however it doesn't have the same level of humor or wild antics that series had. It feels monotonous and while it does have some potentially interesting narratives that would have been fun to see develop, it ends too early for them to have an impact and the sudden romantic development at the end felt rushed and unconvincing.

Gosh, it's not like this is the first time I've red/watched this series (its infect the million time XDDwink, Oh, Shinkumi my heart is just~~~Kyaaaa I want more!!! This Manga/Anime/Jdrama are PERFECT and it's sad that there aren't anything like it anywhere. Thanks to this manga I got sooo into the OlderFem and YoungerMa thing, but all I found in other mangas: Smut, silly plot, more smut, lame ENDINGS *sigh*

Wish there was more, this manga is EPIC!

I remember watching the anime years ago when I only watched anime. I finally get the finish this because the the anime only covers half of the manga. I like that the teacher is female and a strong one at that. I was surprised how the art was different from the anime, but it does get better after each volume.

The ending was okay, but I thought it could have been better. Everything started to wrap up in 5-10 chapters and I felt it was kind of rushed. For the romance, there aren't much build up between the characters and you only really see some romance between the characters near the end of the manga. For me, it's more of a comedy manga then a romance one.

Overall, I like it. I only give this a 8/10 because some chapters are fillers. The author could have used those chapters to make a better ending.

I loved this series overall, and the students became so entertaining after a while.

90% of the time it was the female lead who ended up saving the male(s), and that was quite refreshing.

Reminds me of Tokyo Crazy Paradise (only because I read that first), but with a little less emphasis on romance. I agree with all the other comments that says how great this manga is. Go read it if you haven't!

Well, I forgot what else I wanted to add, but I'll come back to edit this comment. Conclusively, to describe this manga in one word: WONDERFUL.

oh dear.

Shin is the love of my life. And I adore the overwhelming chemistry between Shin and Yamaguchi!! They are so perfect for each other in my eyes even though the spicier scenes don't even start until wayyyy later in the series!!

Yamaguchi is also a wonderful human being. She is hilarious omg.

And the lawyer dude is amusing as well. Although he never did much as the third wheel, I love him as a character on his own. He is relatable, and his actions are more understandable than the actions of typical third wheelers out there in the shoujo world.

All in all, this manga is the love of my much that I watched the anime and Japanese live adaption starring Jun Matsumoto (this was how I fell in love with Jun too...ha ha ha)
