The first time I've seen Castle Mango, I instantly became hesitant and have started giving it a second thought about reading it. I still have not even read Haru wo daite ita yet, which is, I guess, more acclaimed, famous and also in the AV industry, in fact. I'm still not used with this kind. Then I read some reviews and most of them say it's good. So I've decided to give it a try.
As for the plot, it already gave me an impression that maybe it would be the same as Haru wo daite ita [despite having different manga-kas]. Gladly, it didn't. The story's very much refreshing for someone who has allotted most of the time laughing one's ass off with those comedic manga, jerking tears out of one's eyes for the drama-genre manga, or just annoying oneself for some clichéd shoujo-ish BL. It's different. The mangaka has pointed out every development of this slow-pacing romance nicely. It did not appeared to as a rushed love story just to make all reades blush and squeal, nor as a slow moving story just to make series longer. It's not just the typical hug-kiss-sex-I love you pattern. The story itself does have sense, not neglecting some points of it but interconnecting with one another - though it's not some kind of parable laughs. I wonder what will happen in the end.
The characters, well, they all have purpose in the story. Okay, most. Some were left behind, but in a nice way. The mangaka let the protagonists shine more but not outshining the others. As for me, Togame - san is my favorite. And it's new to me to see a seme who's an idiot [academically] but striving.
The art, it's nice, clean, and clear. The guys look like guys and so do girls. No girly uke, at last. But some of the illustrations are lacking of the emotions and feelings.
All in all, the manga is good. Not overrated, but not so peculiar that it ended up becoming fantasy. But there's something missing. Maybe some conviction, I don't know.
